Yvonne's Dance Academy (YDA) was founded in 2008 as a one-room studio at St. Benedict Preparatory School and has grown to roughly 200 dancers in Chicago's North Center community. It now teaches from two locations: its IPR studio at 1733 W Irving Park Rd and its original rooms at St. Benedict Preparatory School on N Bell Ave. The academy's stated purpose is to educate and inspire children in a safe, nurturing and structured setting, teaching developmentally appropriate skills while encouraging creative expression and using dance to build self-esteem and character. Ballet is treated as the technical foundation and is a required class for all students; alongside it YDA offers levelled specialty classes in hip hop, contemporary, tap, pre-pointe and pointe, and leaps, tricks and turns, plus an Elite Team and a high-school-only class for dancers wanting more. The studio closes for summer, registers for fall through Class Juggler, and stages an annual recital.
