RACE Opens Friday March 1 At TheatreWorks New Milford Image

On Friday, March 1, TheatreWorks New Milford will premiere David Mamet's compelling drama, Race. The curtain rises at 8:00 p.m. every Friday and Saturday for a three-week run.

It begins as a mystery: A white business leader-wealthy, articulate, powerful-has a sexual encounter with an African American staff member. Although he insists it's consensual, she charges him with rape. The executive, who is told by every major law firm in town that his case is unwinnable, ends up in a small legal office headed by two lawyers: one black, one white. Although at first they refuse the case they eventually relent, due largely to the actions of their assistant, also a young African American woman. But as they prepare their client's defense, the lawyers soon face a fundamental issue more incendiary than the simple truth of what happened: in the racially charged, politically "correct" world of America in the twenty-first century, can such a case ever be decided on facts alone?

When asked why he chose to direct Race, director Francis A. Daley says, "Putting aside all references to current events, historical background of the topic, and the need for a diverse cast, this play offers a look into the dynamics of human relations in very stressful situations. Our very existence in this modern society is governed by convention as much as it is by law, perhaps more so."

Race runs for ONLY 7 performances, March 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 15 and 16. Curtain time is 8:00 p.m. Fridays & Saturdays, with a 2:00 p.m. Sunday matinee on March 10. Tickets for all shows are $25 for reserved seating. Students and Military personnel with ID will be admitted for $20.

On Thursday, February 28 at 8:00 p.m. is TheatreWorks' Pay-What-You-Want night. At this performance, you name the price for your ticket. Reservations for all other performances can be made online at theatreworks.us or by calling the box office at (860) 350-6863.
