Hartt’s Vocal Students Shine in a Variety of Vocal and Opera Performances

Hartt's annual charity benefit, Sing for the City, takes place on Sunday, October 16, at 3:00 PM, at the St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, 285 Church Street, Hartford. The Hartt Choral Department, along with guest choruses, presents its annual Sing for the City fundraising concert. This year's charity is the Sandwich Ministry of the Franciscan Center. This organization works to alleviate hunger for the homeless, unemployed, and underemployed. The concert features a wide variety of choral repertoire conducted by Edward Bolkovac, Colin Britt, Gabriel Löfvall, and Stuart Younse. All proceeds go directly to the Sandwich Ministry.

Sophomore Vocal Performance majors present the Sophomore Vocal Recitals on Friday, November 11, at 8:00 PM, and Saturday, November 12, at 2:00 PM, in Berkman Recital Hall, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Admission is free, but space is limited.

Undergraduate vocal students present George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess (abridged) as this year's Undergraduate Black Box Opera performance on Thursday, December 1, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Admission is free.

The Vocal Studies Division presents the New England premiere of Thomas Pasatieri's The Hotel Casablanca Thursday, February 2, through Saturday, February 4, at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, February 5, at 3:00 PM, in Millard Auditorium, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. This undergraduate main stage opera is a two-act comedy that takes place in Texas during the summer of 1948 and tells the story of a wealthy couple who hopes to toughen up their 25 year old nephew from New York. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups.

Hartt's annual Collage Concert features continuous music, dance, and theatre. Hartt's gift to the community, Collage takes place on Friday, February 17, and Saturday, February 18, at 7:30 PM, in Lincoln Theater, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford. Admission is free, but tickets are required.

As part of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, The Hartt School Choruses join forces with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Hartford Chorale, and New Haven Chorale for a gala performance of Verdi's monumental Messa da Requiem on Friday, March 16, at 8:00 PM, at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph, 140 Farmington Avenue, Hartford. The Combined chorus, numbering more than 350, and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Hartt Professor Edward Bolkovac. Under the direction of Robert Barefield, first year Vocal Studies Division students present First Year Vocal Recitals on Thursday, April 26, and Thursday, May, 3, at 5:00 PM, in Berkman Recital Hall. Admission is free.

On Sunday, April 29, at 4:00 PM, at Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford, students of the Vocal Studies Division present a Spring Choral Concert. Admission is free.
