Eastbound Theatre presents 4,000 MILES

Eastbound Theatre, a division of the Milford Arts Council is excited to present the third show of its 23rd season, the compelling piece, 4,000 Miles, by Amy Herzog.

Directed by Nancy A. Herman, 4,000 Miles is a warm-hearted play that is both funny and moving as it chronicles the sometimes difficult but always loving relationship between 21-year-old Leo and his feisty 91-year old grandmother, Vera.

Feeling alone and alienated after suffering a major loss while on a cross-country bicycle trip, Leo shows up at his grandmother's West Village apartment. While most of the major events of the story occur off stage, the psychological and personal fall-out from those events creates powerful tension infused with intimacy and humor, as over the weeks that follow, these unlikely roommates infuriate, bewilder, and eventually come to understand one another.

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for 4,000 Miles, Amy Herzog is a highly acclaimed American playwright with nominations for the Lucille Lortel Award and Drama Desk Award. She is known for her facility with dialogue and has based several of her characters on family members, most notably her grandmother, after whom Vera is modeled.

As Herman explains, "I love this play - 4000 Miles - for so many reasons! It is a gentle comic drama that allows the audience to care about each of the characters as they gradually reveal their most vulnerable selves to one another. The heart of the story is often divulged as much by what is not said as what is, and what finally unfolds is a nuanced, truthful, and touching exploration of the healing powers of compassion and intimacy. Working on this production is an intimate journey into the very textured lives of these wonderful and fragile characters."

Featuring Matthew Bennett of Wallingford, Sehee Lee of North Haven, Carmen Mendez of New Haven, and Katie Scott of Milford, the production will run from June 2 through June 18, 2017 at the Milford Center for the Arts, 40 Railroad Avenue, Milford, CT. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm, Sunday matinees are at 2pm.
