Hailed as one of the most talented songwriters of her generation, Grammy-winning Suzanne Vega is poised to inherit the singer-songwriter throne from such veteran artists as Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris.  Following her success with hits like "Luka," "Tom's Diner" and "New York Is A Woman," Suzanne's writing for films and TV took her out of the limelight of live performances for too long.

But happily for fans of contemporary folk and alternative rock-for those who love master storytellers via song-Suzanne Vega makes a stop at PlayhouseSquare Oct. 6 at 8 pm as part of her European/U.S. Close-Up Tour, complete with the Vega hits, familiar tunes plus new material.  Suzanne's intimate Ohio Theatre performance will illustrate why some performers must be experienced in person.

In light of her self-imposed live performance hiatus, Suzanne's latest tour could have been less than successful...would fans remember her...would critics? Fortunately, her talent is once again garnering rave reviews.  A loyal fan following continues to dote on her eclectic style encompassing story and folk-based songs, experimental and alternative rock and songs based on city life, ordinary people and real world subjects.

Suzanne has been dubbed "The Mother of the MP3," thanks to German computer programmer Karlheinz Brandenburg who used her voice as the template to develop the technology for what was to become known as the MP3.

Suzanne's many albums have earned her multiple Grammy Awards, and her songs have been featured on the soundtrack of a variety of films such as Dead Man Walking, Pretty in Pink, The Truth About Cats & Dogs plus projects about The Grateful Dead, Leonard Cohen and Pavarotti.

Over the years she has been a regular on Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair tours, and, while she continues to write and record (now for her own record label (Amenuensis Productions), she also counts a Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting  to her credit as host of public radio's 13 hour-long programs "American Mavericks."  Suzanne is also the author of The Passionate Eye: The Collected Writings of Suzanne Vega, a volume of poems, lyrics, essays and journalistic pieces.

Born in California but reared in NYC's Spanish Harlem, Suzanne attend the High School for The Performing Arts (which her daughter, Ruby, now attends) before studying English Literature at Barnard College.  She is married to lawyer/poet Paul Mills, who proposed to her originally in 1983.  It took Suzanne 22 years to accept his proposal, which she did on Christmas Day, 2005.

(Tickets for Suzanne Vega's 8 pm concert Oct. 6th at PlayhouseSquare's Ohio Theatre are priced at $35, $25 & $10 Smart Seats, and are available at www.playhousesquare.org, at the Ticket Window, or at 216-241-6000.)
