Gem of the Ocean by August Wilson plays September 23 - October 16, 2011 at Playhouse on the Square

Set in 1904, ‘Gem' is chronologically the first of ten plays in August Wilson's acclaimed Century Cycle examining the African-American experience, decade-by-decade. When Citizen Barlow lets another man die for one of his crimes, it sparks a chain of events that drives a community deeper into turmoil and sets Citizen on a journey to redemption in which he must remember the pain of the past before he can truly be free. "A swelling battle hymn of transporting beauty."- The NY Times

Gem of the Ocean is directed by Tony Horne (No Niggers, No Jews, No Dogs) and features Emmanuel McKinney making his Playhouse on the Square debut as "Citizen". Also featured: LazOra Jones, Jamie Mann (Superior Donuts), Ron Gephart (2011 Recipient of the Eugart Yerian Award for Lifetime Achievement), Mark Davis, Morgan Malone, and Rozell Henderson.

Gem of the Ocean runs at Playhouse on the Square September 23 - October 16, Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Pay-What-You-Can performance is Thursday, September 29th.
