About The Citadel: Birth of the LeVeque Tower
The Citadel: The Birth of the LeVeque Tower is a fascinating look at the birth and evolution of Columbus' first skyscraper, the LeVeque Tower, which has long been the defining image of the city skyline. Commissioned by the American Insurance Union, the art deco skyscraper was originally called the American Insurance (AIU) Citadel. Rising 555.5 feet into the sky, the Citadel was intentionally built 6" taller than the Washington Monument, and when it opened in 1927, was the tallest building between New York and Chicago and the fifth highest building in the world. The building was hailed as ‘an aerial lighthouse' because lights constructed on the top were a beacon to aviators for 75 miles. The film explores the creation of the skyscraper by local businessman and politician John J. Lentz and noted theatre architect C. Howard Crane, who designed one of America's most ornamental and visually splendid buildings which became a symbol of American progress.

The Citadel: Birth of the LeVeque Tower was produced by the Columbus Landmarks Foundation with support from an Ohio Humanities Council grant and private donations.
