Cleveland Play House Awarded Job Preservation Grant From National Endowment For The Arts

Managing Director Kevin Moore is proud to announce that The Cleveland Play House is a recipient of a $25,000 direct grant from National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) as part of the NEA’s share of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a federal economic stimulus recovery package.  The Play House is one of 631 nonprofit arts organizations receiving grants to support the preservation of jobs that are threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn.

Moore asserts that "nonprofit arts organizations such as The Play House are proud members of the business community—employing people locally, purchasing goods and services within the community, and involved in the marketing and promotion of their cities.” He says, “This grant will help us keep our focus on our mission of providing the Greater Cleveland community with outstanding theatre and arts education programming.”

The National Endowment for the Arts is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education. Established by Congress in 1965 as an independent agency of the federal government, the Arts Endowment is the nation’s largest annual funder of the arts, bringing great art to all 50 states, including rural areas, inner cities, and military bases. Founded in 1915, The Cleveland Play House is the first permanently established professional theatre in the United States. More than 12 million people have attended over 1,300 productions at The Play House – including more than 130 American and/or World Premieres. The Cleveland Play House is funded through the generosity of Cuyahoga County residents through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, and The Ohio Arts Council which helps to fund The Cleveland Play House with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
