Description



The Technical Director of Production (TDoP) for UCCS Presents is responsible for overseeing the safe operation and use of the UCCS scene shop, scenic construction, rigging, and installation including the preparation of project cost estimates, drafting scenic construction drawings, rigging diagrams, managing scene shop crew staffing and scheduling. The TDoP is responsible for the tools and equipment therein, their safe and proper operation and maintenance, and for making recommendations for and coordinating the logistics required for equipment purchases.







Job Duties:





Along with Production Management, help to lead, guide, and facilitate communication between the scene shop, painters, and crew and the scenic designers.



Work to ensure that crew working under their supervision do so with proper training and attention to safety and established protocols and policies. This includes the consistent implementation of established equipment maintenance (including preventative), records keeping, and incident reporting.



In conversation with the Production Manager, will create cost estimates of THEATREWORKS scenic designs using a solution-oriented and collaborative approach towards maintaining the artistic intention of the directors and designers when addressing budgetary constraints.



Creation of construction drawings, rigging plans, build schedules, materials lists, etc. for all THEATREWORKS productions.

Provide consultation as needed to the ME/Events Supervisor, Theatre and Dance Department faculty, and students in their efforts to prepare similar production materials for non-THEATREWORKS productions.

Supervise staff, students, and overhire crew to build, load-in, safely use, strike, store, and/or dispose of all THEATREWORKS scenery, rigging, soft goods, props, and associated materials and equipment for THEATREWORKS productions.

Monitors the condition of equipment, confers with the Production Manager on the repair and replacement of equipment and coordinates the logistics of new equipment purchases or repairs.

Oversees the day-to-day cleanliness of the Dusty-Loo Bon Vivant theatre, backstage areas, and scene shop.

Participate in the planning and design of capital improvements for theatres, shops, offices, and equipment upgrades.



Responsible for reading rehearsal schedules, facilities calendars, show and rehearsal reports and responding in a timely fashion, including following up on applicable details/notes and communicating with stage management, other department supervisors, and staff as appropriate.



Direct the preparation of and be responsible for all official UCCS and UCCS Presents financial functions to ensure that the policies of the University are upheld. Supervise budgets and ensure that expenses do not exceed revenue.

Job will require night and weekend work as needed.

Job Competencies:





Develop contingency plans to improve processes and to avoid problems before they occur.



Analyze scenic and stage-related systems and equipment for effectiveness and efficiency; develop and implement management and/or engineering improvements to increase efficiency and safety



Provide technical expertise and advice for productions using the facilities, supervise design and execution of scenic/rigging/technical needs.



Communicates emergency evacuation procedures and provides relevant knowledge to appropriate university departments in case of a disaster.



Ensures the maintenance of all stage-related equipment including prevntative maintenance, inspection, and repair.

Ability to implement plans to reach organizational goals.



Utilize preferred tools, techniques, and methods for estimating project cost and time. Consult and advise on techniques and other aspects of technical production.

Elaborate on best practices of OSHA compliance based on own experience. Act as safety observer/supervisor for all uses of stage and scene shop facilities.



For the purposes of FLSA, this position has been determined to be non-exempt from (eligible for) overtime under FLSA.







Salary Range: $42,000 to $50,000

Qualifications



Minimum Requirements:



A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional theatrical technical experience in a professional theatre. (May substitute experience on a year-for-year basis for the bachelor's degree).



Two years of experience with MicroSoft Office (especially Excel) and drafting (AutoCAD/Vectorworks).

Valid Colorado driver license or ability to obtain a valid Colorado driver license within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Requirements:



Experience working in a professionally managed scene shop and production environment.



Leadership experience in technical production including cost analysis and drafting for scenic construction (metal and wood), rigging, and personnel management.



Candidates should have experience in all manner of theatrical scenery construction and installation (Welding, Rigging, Wood Constructions, Finish Carpentry, etc.)



Rigging certification is preferred.



Track record of effective work, both independently and as a crew leader.



Understanding and experience with automation, including pneumatics, hydraulics, motors and control.
