LISTING INFORMATION

This full-time, exempt position is responsible for managing all aspects of Boston Ballet’s Costume Shop, including managing staff, workflow, and budget. The Director of Costumes oversees a staff to maintain and create all the costume elements for all the ballets, including shoes and hair. This is a Senior Leader level position that regularly interfaces with the Artistic and Production Staff as well as the Company Manager. The ideal candidate will be an inspirational, engaged, and collaborative leader.



RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

Staff Management

• Hire appropriate permanent and temporary staff for Costume Shop and Wardrobe and oversee payroll

• Direct all costume shop employees in their work and work products, ensuring that they understand their job requirements and Ballet expectations.

• Develop staff production schedule for the season and provide an overall vision of the scope of work by the year, month, and weeks.

• Oversee the workflow of the shop floor.

• Set operating standards for the shop and at the theater, including procedures and protocols.

• Oversee safety procedures, implementation, and compliance.

• Responsible for direct reports’ annual performance evaluations and the development of goals for professional growth as well as ongoing coaching and performance management.



Costumes

• Manage quality, construction, and maintenance of all costume elements.

• Oversee costume fittings as needed.

• Coordinate with Artistic Director to realize all costume designs.

• Consult with Artistic staff to ensure artistic standards are being met. Serve as visual eye when designer is unavailable for fittings and daily work.

• Attend dress rehearsals and respond to in-theatre needs

• Negotiate costume designers’ contracts.

• Negotiate incoming costume rental contracts.

• Order/shop for supplies, approve purchase orders, and oversee and advise on all other expenditures, including shoe ordering and distribution.



Financial Management

• Develop and manage the Costume Shop's budget and cash flow for the season.

• Communicate budget information and appropriate information to shop staff.



Other job-related assignments as needed.





QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

• Minimum of 10-12 years of experience as a costume shop supervisor and/or wardrobe supervisor in theatre, opera and/ or ballet

• Strong leadership, staff management, and project management skills

• Professional knowledge of design, costume construction, textiles, dying, and all aspects of shop operations

• Strong budgeting skills

• Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills

• Microsoft Word and Excel proficiency

• Accuracy, flexibility, creativity, and ability to work well with various personalities
