The Gewandhausorchester is the oldest civic symphony orchestra in the world, its history stretching back in excess of 250 years. Few orchestras have played such an active, formative role in the development of symphonic music as the Gewandhausorchester. It was the only ensemble to perform all nine symphonies of Beethoven during the composer's lifetime. It also presented the world’s first complete Bruckner cycle as well as the first Shostakovich cycle during the 1970s. The roster of Gewandhauskapellmeister (the music director of Gewandhausorchester) includes conductors of such eminence as Mendelssohn, Nikisch, Furtwängler, Walter, Masur and Blomstedt. Riccardo Chailly assumed the position of Gewandhauskapellmeister at the beginning of the 2005/06 season.

Born in Milan, Riccardo Chailly has conducted all of the world's most renowned orchestras, as well as taking the podium at its most illustrious opera houses. He has long been a regular guest at the music world's most prestigious festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, Lucerne Festival and the BBC Proms in London. He enjoyed a highly celebrated sixteen year tenure as Chief Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam (1988-2004). His discography with DECCA comprises in excess of 150 CDs, many of which have received many awards, including the Edison Prize and the Gramophone Award, the Diapason d’Or, as well as many Grammy nominations. The journals "Diapason" and "Gramophone" both elected Chailly "Artist of the Year" in 1998.
