  3. Piano Recital by Martino Tirimo

Martino Tirimo’s playing is often compared to that of Schnabel, Arrau and Rubinstein and his extensive discography of over 50 recordings for EMI, BMG and other companies include the piano concertos of Brahms, Chopin, Rachmaninov, Tippett (with Tippett conducting), the complete solo works of Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy, all Janacek works and the first complete set of Schubert’s 21 Sonatas on 8 CDs (EMI). For his Rachmaninov 2nd Concerto and Paganini Rhapsody, one of EMI’s best sellers, he received a Gold Disc. In September 2011 he was awarded the 2011 Nemitsas Foundation Prize for Excellence in the Arts and Sciences.

During 2009-2010 he gave nearly 100 concerts including several series devoted to Chopin’s complete works, in celebration of the composer’s 200th anniversary of birth, to exceptional critical acclaim. Ten of these concerts were at London’s Kings Place and also contained the 6 works for piano and orchestra. The Arts Desk described the series as ‘a colossal feat’.

One of the highlights in his life was in the Olympic year of 2004 when he had the honour to run with the Olympic torch, perhaps the first classical musician to have done so.

Tirimo is of Greek descent and was born into a musical family in Cyprus. From the age of 6 he was already playing much chamber music with his father, a fine violinist and conductor. As child prodigy he performed Concertos from the age of 8 and, when only 12, he conducted La Traviata seven times at a festival with soloists from La Scala, Milano. At 13 the family moved to London and at 16 he won the Franz Liszt Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he graduated with the highest honours. He completed his studies in Vienna and also with Gordon Green, whom he regarded as his greatest mentor.

He came to world attention in 1971/72 when he won the international competitions in Munich and Geneva and has since appeared with most major orchestras all over the world, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Dresden Staatskapelle, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Cleveland Orchestra, London Symphony, Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and numerous others, with conductors such as Barbirolli, Berglund, Boult, Bychkov, Elder, Klee, Marriner, Masur, Norrington, Kurt Sanderling and Rattle. He has also directed from the keyboard several cycles of the Beethoven Concertos, with the Dresden Philharmonic, notably in Germany and at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

He has given numerous series devoted to Mozart’s complete works, Beethoven’s 32 Sonatas, Schubert’s 21 Sonatas, Chopin’s complete works, Robert and Clara Schumann’s principal works, as well as series of Mozart Concertos, directing the Prague Chamber Orchestra. In 2004 performances included concerts with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and at the Athens Festival, during the Olympic Games period, with the Vienna Philharmonic, underneath Acropolis.

As conductor he has frequently appeared with the Dresden Philharmonic as well as other orchestras such as the English Chamber and Prague Chamber orchestras. His compositions include the film score for “The Odyssey”, which was screened in 8 episodes on Channel 4 in the UK and other TV stations in Europe and USA. Among his TV appearances, memorable was his performance of the Tippett Piano Concerto which was transmitted live by the BBC TV from Coventry Cathedral in celebration of the composer’s 90th birthday and the UN’s 50th anniversary. Since 2002 he has also been very active in chamber music, touring extensively with his Trio, the Rosamunde Trio (www.rosamundetrio.com).

His repertoire is enormous, including 80 Concertos and most of the major solo works of the great composers. He has become a champion of the Dvorak Concerto and also the Tippett Concerto, which he performed several times with the composer conducting, in Germany and the UK. Their recording of it for Nimbus, with the BBC Philharmonic, is regarded as ‘historic’.

Tirimo is in great demand for masterclasses all over the world and, occasionally, serves on juries of international piano competitions. Twelve of his students have won first prizes at international competitions.

He is also particularly renowned for his Schubert interpretations and his Urtext edition of the Schubert Sonatas is published by Wiener Urtext in 3 Volumes, with his own completions to the unfinished movements. In 2014 he is due to perform once again all the Schubert Sonatas and the composer’s major works at Kings Place in London.
