Video: Playwright York Walker and Director Malkia Stampley Discuss the Inspiration Behind COVENANT at Goodman Theatre
The Midwest Premiere of York Walker's spine-tingling new play runs May 2 through May 31, 2026 in Goodman's Owen Theatre.
Goodman Theatre has released a video featuring playwright York Walker and director Malkia Stampley discussing the inspiration behind COVENANT, the Midwest Premiere of Walker's mythic and suspenseful new play now playing through May 31, 2026 in the Owen Theatre.
In the video, Walker and Stampley explore how Black horror films and the mysterious lore of a blues legend shaped the creation of this spine-tingling work, which features top Chicago talent throughout its cast.
The play follows a struggling guitarist who left a small Georgia town and returned a blues star, as rumors of a darker deal abound and it becomes clear he is not the only one with a secret or seeking salvation.
The cast features Debo Balogun as Johnny James, Ashli René Funches as Ruthie, Jaeda LaVonne as Avery, Felicia Oduh as Violet, and Anji White as Mama. The creative team includes Ryan Emens (set design), Evelyn M. Danner (costumes), Gina Patterson (lighting), and Dee Etti-Williams (sound), with Mike Przygoda serving as music director and composer.
Special events include a Behind the Curtain pre-show conversation on May 8 and a Hidden Gems vendor fair on May 23. Accessible performances include ASL interpretation on May 22, a touch tour and audio-described performance on May 23, Spanish subtitles on May 23, and open captions on May 24.
COVENANT is recommended for audiences 15 and up. For tickets, visit GoodmanTheatre.org/Covenant or call the box office at (312) 443-3800.
