Theatre & Interpretation Center at Northwestern Opens Season With TARTUFFE 10/22

The Theatre and Interpretation Center (TIC) at Northwestern University, will launch its 30th Anniversary season with Moliere's comedic masterpiece "Tartuffe" (Oct. 22 to Nov. 6), directed by The Hypocrites theatre company artistic director Sean Graney.

The School of Communication's department of performance studies has scheduled two evening performances of "Passing Solo" (Oct. 29 and 30), a one-woman work by guest artist Nancy Cheryll Davis.

All events are open to the public and will take place on Northwestern's Evanston campus. Ticket information follows each performance listing, as noted below.

For the first time, TIC is offering $10 single ticket prices to Thursday night season performances to U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families (with a valid military ID), as well as $10 ticket discounts for Northwestern alumni (with a valid WildCARD) who have graduated within the past two years.

Barber Theater, Evanston campus. Renowned Chicago director Sean Graney will launch the Theatre and Interpretation Center's 30th anniversary season with his irreverent adaption of Moliere's "Tartuffe." Featuring Northwestern alumnus and Lookingglass ensemble member David Catlin, celebrated Chicago actress and Northwestern alumna Ann Whitney and Northwestern student actors, this tale of a family patriarch, a devout fraud and unquenchable lecherous desire is one of the greatest comedic masterpieces of all time. Ticket prices are $25 for the general public; $22 for seniors 65 and older, Northwestern faculty and staff and area educators and administrators; and $10 for full-time students. "Passing Solo," 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, Alvina Krause Studio, Annie May Swift Hall, 1920 Campus Drive, Evanston campus. "Passing Solo" is a one-woman performance by guest artist Nancy Cheryll Davis, a critically acclaimed actress, director, and producer and founding artistic director of the Towne Street Theatre, an African-American theatre company in Los Angeles. It is based on the Towne Street Theatre play "Passing," adapted by Davis from Nella Larsen's 1927 novella. A memory play, it explores the conflicting demands of race and friendship, and the slippery line between trust and deception. Davis portrays Irene Westover Redfield and Clare Kendry Bellew, childhood friends who encounter one another as adults in 1920s Harlem, and who share a secret: their birth certificates read "Negro" but both can -- and do -- pass as whitE. Davis received the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Bellew in "Passing." Both performances are presented as part of the "solo/black/woman performance series," funded in part by a grant from the Mellon Foundation. Admission is free, but seating is limited.
