The New Victory Theatre Presents 'Hunchback' October 4th

By:

What happens when you combine one of the world's most beloved literary classics with bewitching puppets and an acclaimed American theater company famous for creating otherworldly theatrical spectacles and wondrous Halloween events?

You get HUNCHBACK by Chicago's Redmoon Theater, an original adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The New Victory Theater will present HUNCHBACK from October 24 through November 9, 2008.

Completely re-staged and reimagined by 500 Clown director, Leslie Bauxbaum Danzig, this new production of Redmoon's HUNCHBACK premiered during the company's 2007 Chicago season. Award-winning HUNCHBACK is a new version of the play that was first presented in New York eight years ago to critical acclaim as part of the Henson International Festival of Puppet Theater.

HUNCHBACK is both a gripping and, at times, comic stage adaptation of the classic tale that doubles as a spectacular Halloween treat from visionary American puppet masters. With Victor Hugo himself as your guide, wander through the crooked cobblestone streets of medieval Paris and follow the story of a beautiful Gypsy dancer, a grand cathedral and a courageous heart. With numerous forms of puppetry and unique puppets - one of which is so large that it requires three puppeteers - plus expertly crafted masks, spellbinding music and grand athleticism, Redmoon's intricate production gives Quasimodo, La Esmeralda and Claude Frollo thrilling, three-dimensional life.

HUNCHBACK was conceived and designed by Jim Lasko, and it is directed by Leslie Buxbaum Danzig. Original music is by Michael Zerang, spoken text is by Mickle Mahler and the costume designer is Joel Klaff. The original puppet designer was Laura Heit, and the original co-designer of the masks (as well as the sets) was Shoshanna Utchenik.

The cast includes: Calvin Dutton, Mary Winn Heider, Katie Rose McLaughlin, Alden Moore, Jeremy Sher, Samuel Taylor, Jay Torrence and Leah Urzendowski.

HUNCHBACK is best for ages eight to adult. To get into the Halloween spirit, kids are invited to wear costumes to the performance at 7 p.m. on Thursday, 10/30.

The New 42nd Street thanks the Jim Henson Foundation for providing a special presentation grant in support of HUNCHBACK at The New Victory Theater.
