Rick Steves to Share His View of World Travel at the MAC This Month

Rick Steves, host and writer of the popular PBS series "Rick Steves' Europe" and bestselling author of more than 50 European travel books, shares his world view of travel in a special lecture, "Travel as a Political Act" at the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. This event is presented as part of the College of DuPage College Lecture Series.

A free MAC Chat will take prior to the lecture at 1 p.m. Provided by COD Faculty and staff of the Field Studies/Study Abroad department. Their lecture will focus on what is means to be a global citizen as well as learn about the opportunities offered here at COD to discover that the world in your classroom.

Rick Steves' "Travel as a Political Act" lecture is an opportunity for fans to discover how travel has shaped his world view, social activism, and political work, and get tips for turning their next trip into a broadening experience. There will also be an opportunity to meet Steves during the book signing in the MAC lobby immediately following the lecture.

Rick Steves took his first trip to Europe in 1969, visiting piano factories with his father, a piano importer. At age 18, Steves began traveling on his own, funding his trips by teaching piano lessons. In 1976, he started his business, Rick Steves' Europe, which has grown from a one-man operation to a company with a staff of 100 full-time, well-travelled employees at his headquarters in Washington state. There he produces more than 50 guidebooks on European travel, America's most popular travel series on public television, a weekly hour-long national public radio show, a weekly syndicated column, and free travel information available through his travel center and ricksteves.com. Rick Steves' Europe also runs a successful European tour program and believes travel becomes a political act only if you do something with your broadened perspective, he has incorporated his travel discoveries into real action back home.

"Rick Steves: Travel as a Political Act" comes to the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) located at 425 Fawell Blvd.on the campus of College of DuPage Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $35-$45. McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at College of DuPage is located 25 miles west of Chicago near I-88 and I-355, and houses three performance spaces (the 780-seat proscenium Belushi Performance Hall; the 236-seat soft-thrust Playhouse Theatre; and the versatile black box Studio Theatre), plus the Cleve Carney Art Gallery, classrooms for the college's academic programming and the Lakeside Pavilion. The MAC, now celebrating its 30th Anniversary, has presented theater, music, dance and visual art to more than 1.5 million people since its opening in 1986 and typically welcomes more than 75,000 patrons from the greater Chicago area to more than 230 performances each season.
