Ravina Festival Presents Pinchas Zukerman With Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 7/9

Pinchas Zukerman returns to Ravinia this week as both violinist and conductor beginning with a Thursday, July 8, performance featuring himself as violinist and including cellist Amanda Forsyth alongside the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by James Conlon at 8 p.m. The concert will include Saint-Saëns's La muse et le poète ("The Muse and the Poet"), Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (arr. Ravel), this year's One Score, One Chicago selection. Zukerman performs regularly with the world's finest orchestras and is currently the music director of Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra. Earlier that day pianist Leon Fleisher will conduct a Steans Music Institute master class at 2 p.m. in Bennett • Gordon Hall that is free and open to the public.

The next night, Friday, July 9, Zukerman leads the CSO in a concert featuring his daughter, soprano Arianna Zukerman, in the pavilion at 8 p.m. The all-Mozart program will include "L'amero, saro costante" from Il re pastore, Adagio in E Major for violin and orchestra, Rondo in B-Flat Major for violin and orchestra, Exsultate Jubilate and Symphony No. 40 in G Minor. Arianna has appeared in productions at opera houses including New York City Opera, Chicago Opera Theater and Arizona Opera. Prior to the main-stage concert at 5:45 p.m., a free preview concert in Bennett • Gordon Hall features musicians from Ravinia's Steans Music Institute program for piano and strings.

5 p.m. concert on Sunday, July 11. This American program will include Bernstein's
Symphony No. 2 ("The Age of Anxiety"), Copland's Suite from Appalachian Spring, and Gershwin's Concerto in F. Former Ravinia Rising Star Yang has established herself as one of the leading artists of her generation through her innovative solo recitals and notable collaborations with the world's most prestigious orchestras. Weiss is the winner of the Gilmore Young Artist Award and the Juilliard William Petschek Award and is recipient of the Gina Bachauer Scholarship at The Juilliard School. A free chamber music concert featuring artists from Ravinia's Steans Music Institute will take place at 1 p.m. in Bennett • Gordon Hall. Ravinia presents musicologist Robert Greenberg at 2:30 p.m. in the Martin Theatre for a free pre-concert discussion entitled "Melting Pot, Schmelting Pot: American Concert Music Comes of Age," discussing Bernstein, Copland and Gershwin. From 3 to 4:30 p.m. Ravinia will host a special family space on the north lawn, where families can engage in activities that include music-related crafts, storytelling and an "instrument petting zoo" where kids can experience and play instruments. Following the main-stage performance, a free postlude concert in Bennett • Gordon Hall will feature musicians from Ravinia's Steans Music Institute program for piano and strings. Also on Sunday at 4 p.m. and new this year at Ravinia, the festival presents the Ravinia Wine Club, a partnership with Terlato Wines International which uncorks a new experience that gives audiences a taste of four to five wines from such luxury labels as Chimney Rock and Sanford. KerryGold Butter/ Irish Dairy Farms will accompany the event, providing cheeses, palate cleansers and an appetizer made from Kerry Gold Butter and/or Irish Dairy Farms. Space at the private tasting is limited. The special package which includes reserved seating is $82.

Pianist Leon Fleisher appears in the Martin Theatre at 8 p.m. on Wednesday,

July 7, in a concert featuring violinists Miriam Fried and Ida Kavafian, cellist Laurence Lesser and violists Paul Biss and Kim Kashkashian. All soloists are faculty members of Ravinia's professional studies wing, the Steans Music Institute, for which Fried serves as director of the piano and strings program. This concert celebrates composer Samuel Barber's centennial with a performance of his String Quartet. The program also includes Mozart's String Quintet in G Minor and Brahms's Piano Quartet No. 3 in C Minor. This concert also features a special ticket and dining package for $70.

At 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, Cheap Trick and Squeeze take the pavilion stage for a double bill. Rockford's own Cheap Trick is known for such timeless hits as "I Want You to Want me," "Don't Be Cruel," and "Surrender," and is a musical institution, returning for their third Ravinia performance. Formed in the UK in 1974, Squeeze hit the charts with such singles as "Tempted" and "Hits of the Year."

Ko-Thi Dance Company joins Ravinia's Kraft Kids Concert line-up with an 11 a.M. Martin Theatre show on Saturday, July 10. Ko-Thi comprises artists trained in the history, mythology and techniques of art forms within the African Diaspora. The company is dedicated to the preservation and performance of traditional African-American and Caribbean dance and drumming, using a myriad of traditional instruments, authentic costumes, infectious music and extraordinary dance to educate and bridge the gap between cultures.
