Goodman Theatre Cancels MA RAINEY Performance Following Death of Cast Member
DeCaro was playing the role of Sturdyvant in the production, prior to his death.
According to the Chicago Tribune, The Goodman Theatre halted their Saturday matinee performance of "Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom" due to the death of cast member Matt DeCaro, reports the Chicago Tribune. DeCaro appeared in Friday night’s performance with no evident issue. He died early Saturday at home. DeCaro’s agent, Jim McCaffrey, said the cause of death was yet to be determined but was from natural causes.
The cast decided to perform their Saturday evening performance in his honor, with Scott Aiello stepping into DeCaro's role, Sturdyvant.
DeCaro was a regular to stages in Chicago and performed in numerous productions such as, Goodman Theatre's "The Cherry Orchard," Victory Gardens Theater's production of "Symmetry" along with the role of Mr. Meyers in the world premiere of "Spinning into Butter." He also had numerous TV appearances, which included shows such as “ER,” “Chicago P.D.,” and “Chicago Fire." He was also known for his film roles in “Richie Rich” and “U.S. Marshals.”
Performances of "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" will run until May 3 at the Goodman's Albert Theatre. The production is directed by Chuck Smith and associate directed and music directed by Harry J. Lennix.
