GETTING OUT Opens 4/15 at Columbia College Chicago

By:

Just released from prison, Arlene returns to a run-down apartment in Louisville, intent on starting her life over. But her efforts to maintain serenity and build a new life are threatened by memories and characters who assume she is who and what she used to be.

When Getting Out was first produced in 1978, the New York Post published the following review: "The writing is thrilling in its unadorned honesty, and the characters seethe with genuine life...one of the best plays of the year." Getting Out proceeded to win Marsha Norman the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award and the American Theater Critics Association Citation. Other awards and accolades throughout Norman's career have been numerous and include, among many others, a Pulitzer, a Tony, and the William Inge Distinguished Lifetime Achievement in Theatre Award. She has received 18 honorary degrees from American Colleges and Universities, and is the Co-Chair of the Playwriting Department of Juilliard.

Co-Director Wendi Weber is an actor, teacher and director. She has been teaching at Columbia College Chicago since 2000 and is the recipient of their Excellence in Teaching Award. She has directed three Shakespeare productions at Columbia. She is an associate Artist at Chicago Dramatists and frequently embarks in breaking new ground acting in play premieres.

Co-Director Colleen Halloran is a choreographer, filmmaker, and educator who has been on faculty at Columbia College Chicago since 1997. She is intrigued by the intersection and manipulation of movement, image, and story to arrive at a collective "whole". She has created over 35 dance works for the stage and has been awarded numerous grants for her dance choreography.
