Babes With Blades Theatre Company Announces Special Events

By: Feb. 22, 2012

Babes With Blades Theatre Company (BWBTC), Chicago's all-female stage combat ensemble, will launch a series of special events and deals to coincide with their spring production of "Trash," starting with "War and Piece," a showing of artwork by Victoria Szilagyi.  The exhibit will include Szilagyi's painting "Erinyes," the winner of the 2010 Inspiring Sword & Pen Art Competition.

Inaugurated in 2010, the competition seeks visual art images that can serve as launching points for a writer's imagination.  The winning image serves as the basis for the Joining Sword & Pen Playwriting Competition.  "Erinyes" was the prompt for the most recent iteration of the contest, which resulted in the script of "Trash."  "War and Piece" will show Feb. 29-March 24 at ARC Gallery, 832 W Superior St. #204, Chicago, 60622.

Guests are invited to join BWBTC for an opening night reception on March 2 from 6-9 p.m.

Festivities will continue with a Theatre Thursday event April 5, offered in association with the League of Chicago Theaters.  Join BWBTC ensemble members, including cast members Elizabeth MacDougald* and Jennifer L. Mickelson*, " for an "Irish wake" reception at Poitin Stil.  Appetizers will be provided by Get Off The Couch Catering (www.facebook.com/GOTCcatering

).  Then head across the street for the evening's performance, featuring Alison Dornheggen* and Megan Schemmel.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; tickets are $25 and may be purchased at https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/218754 or by calling 773-904-0391.  Poitin Stil is located at 1502 W. Jarvis, Chicago, 60626 (773-338-3285).

Finally, the company will invite patrons to help support Grace House on May 3-5, collecting donations at all performances.  Grace House is a residential program that provides interim housing, emotional and spiritual support, and professional counseling to women who are exiting the Illinois prison system.  More information is available at http://slministries.org/gh/.

"Trash," by Arthur M. Jolly,  is the winner of the 2011-2012 Joining Sword & Pen Playwriting Competition.  Fresh from a funeral, sisters Diane and Becky dig through a landfill – and family grievances – in search of the letter from their dying mother that Becky threw away unopened.  The production will feature unarmed and found-object combat by JK Choreography.

For the first time in the company's history, BWBTC will present one production with two rotating casts.  Elizabeth MacDougald* and Jennifer L. Mickelson* make up one cast, while the other comprises  Alison Dornheggen* and Megan Schemmel, who returns for her second BWBTC production after appearing as Benvolio in 2011's "Romeo & Juliet."

Production staff includes Leigh Barrett* (Lighting Designer/BWBTC Artistic Director), Libby Beyreis* (Production Manager), Jay Burckhardt (Violence Co-Designer), Jennifer Corcoran (Set Designer), Matthew Cummings (Props Designer), Delia Ford* (Director), Kim Fukawa* (Violence Co-Designer), Sara Robinson (Stage Manager) and Melissa Schlesinger (Sound Designer).
