The Black Nationals is a world premiere play by Kyle Bass, directed by Gilbert McCauley, inspired by the true story of the Syracuse Nationals and their 1954-55 championship season. Set in 1950s Syracuse, the play follows the team's two African American players as they navigate the sport's color barrier and fight to leave their mark on the history of the game at the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement. The production marks the sixth world premiere from Bass to debut at Syracuse Stage, and his final work as the theatre's first Resident Playwright. The Black Nationals celebrates a defining moment of Central New York history while exploring themes of fairness and opportunity.
