York Little Theatre promises an under the sea musical extravaganza with their 81st season opening show, DISNEY'S THE LITTLE MERMAID JR, opening September 20 on the main stage. In a magical kingdom fathoms below, a beautiful young mermaid (played by Amber Emerson) longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father, make a deal with an evil sea witch (Ursula, played by Georgie DeCosmo), and convince a prince (played by Luke Leone) that she's the girl with the enchanting voice he longs to find.
The season opens with DISNEY'S LITTLE MERMAID JUNIOR, to transport our audiences into a whole new world under the sea with surreal black light effects, amazing costumes and innovative set design. The talent features some of the top talents in area high schools and middle schools. Audiences will recognize most of the show-stopping musical numbers such as the award winning Under the Sea, Part of Your World and Poor Unfortunate Souls to name a few. Sebastian, (played by Evan Brooks) and Flounder (played by Jacob Schmitt) round out the cast of almost 40 that includes sea creatures and tentacles that make the 10 foot Ursula come to life.
After his YLT directing debut of THE PRODUCERS in July, Rene Staub will bring another success to the YLT stage. "The cast is amazing. The York area is fortunate to have such a wealth of talent to produce a show of this caliber," Staub said. "The lavish set and costumes compliment the extraordinary talent and large production numbers that will have everyone dancing in the aisles."
Some of the most notable costumes include Ursula's glowing tentacles and sea creatures. Ariel, her mersisters and flounder skate across the stage as though they are swimming beneath the sea. The lighting effects will make the audience feel as though the entire theatre is under the water. The black-light effects make the set and costumes glow, taking the entire musical experience to a whole new level.
