Ithaca's Homecoming Players to Present GOOD PEOPLE at the Kitchen Theatre

By: Jan. 14, 2014

HOMECOMING PLAYERS TO LAUNCH their 2014 season with a staged reading of David Lindsay-Abaire's Good People, for two performances only, Mon Feb 3 and Tue Feb 4, at 7:30pm, as part of the Kitchen Theatre Company's Kitchen Sink Series (which has support from CFCU), at the Kitchen Theatre, 417 W. State St/MLK Jr. St.

Pulitzer-Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire's pitch-perfect snapshot of class and character in South Boston, the neighborhood of his youth, Good People was the 2011 winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, and a Tony and Outer Critics Circle Award winner for outstanding actress in a play.

"For whatever reasons, the seedier milieus of Boston have of late become favorite haunts for popular crime novelists and filmmakers . . . a fashionable place to uncover dark secrets on mean streets. Steeped in mouthy Southie lingo and hard-knocks sociology, Good People has a few secrets of its own, but their revelations are unlikely to startle you. In this play character really is fate. And when you look back, everyone has behaved exactly in character, without any plot-bending, credibility-stretching manipulations on the part of its author." Ben Brantley, New York Times

Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune said, "Unpretentious in its structure and compassionate in notion, this is a well-made play, in the best sense of the term, driven by wrenching confrontations."

An excellent cast has been assembled to bring this slice of Southie to our Ithaca audience: Elizabeth Livesay as Margaret, Lloyd Harris as Stevie, Kit Wainer as Dottie, Katie Spallone as Jean, Gary Weissbrot as Mike, and Michelle Courtney Berry as Kate. Arthur Bicknell will narrate. The ensemble will be directed by Homecoming Players' Artistic Director Rachel Hockett.

This staged reading is the first of five shows to be produced by the Homecoming Players in 2014, of which three others will also be shown at the Kitchen Theatre as part of the Kitchen Sink Series. For more information, you can visit homecomingplayers.org.
