Blackfriars Theatre Extends THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP

More quick changes, more fun, and more wigs. The response has been overwhelming, so Blackfriars is adding on three more performances of "The Mystery Of Irma Vep (A Penny Dreadful Comedy), by Charles Ludlam.

Eric Rezsnyak in Rochester's City News declares: "all of the over-the-top trappings are just fodder for the main conceit of the play: two actors portray every character in the show, requiring lightning-quick costume changes and an intense amount of concentration and versatility on the part of the performers. In the Blackfriars production those actors are Ed Popil (as Nicodemus, Lady Enid, Alcazar, and Pev Amri) and Jake Purcell (as Jane, Lord Edgar, and the intruder). The pair of actors creates clearly defined, totally different characters, and attacks each of them with gusto and not even a hint of subtlety."

This definitive spoof of Gothic melodramas is a quick change marathon, in which two actors play all the roles. A sympathetic werewolf, a vampire, and an Egyptian princess brought to life when her tomb is opened, it led the NY Daily News to declare it as "Lunatic fun that keeps you in stitches."

"The Mystery Of Irma Vep," stars Jake Purcell and Ed Popil, and is directed by Danny Hoskins.

The extended dates are Thursday, November 10, at 7:30, and Friday and Saturday, November 11 and 12 at 8 pm.
