Participants May Make And Play With Pioneer-Era Games And Toys at Fort Caspar

Come to Fort Caspar Museum on Saturday, July 28th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm for our monthly program Fremont Family Funday. This month's hands-on, kid-friendly workshop is "Pioneer Games and Toys."

Participants may choose to make a rag doll or a thaumatrope-or both. Many pioneer children had dolls fashioned simply out of rags and leftover fabric. The rag doll is a fun and simple way to create a toy out of materials on hand, with no sewing required. A thaumatrope is an optical illusion toy that was popular in the 19th century. A disk or card with a picture on each side is spun or twisted quickly which appears to blend the two images into one due to what is called "persistence of vision."

This is a drop-in program, so please arrive between 1:00 and 3:00 pm; no reservations are required and all supplies will be provided. This program is open to all ages and is free with paid museum admission. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Fort Caspar Museum's summer hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. Admission prices are $4 for adults; $3 for seniors (62+ years) and youth (ages 13-18 years); FREE for children (12 years and younger) and for Museum members.
