Welcome to BWW Movies World's new daily ON THIS DAY series celebrating film openings and special events that took place on this day in cinematic history!

On December 7, 1979, STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, was released in theaters. Released by Paramount picture, it was the first film based on STAR TREK, and a direct sequel to the television series of the same name.

Set in the 23rd centrury, the film picks up when a mysterious and powerful alien cloud, V'Ger, sets a direct course for Earth, and destroys everything in its path. The legendary James T. Kirk (William Shatner) is forced to retake command of the USS Enterprise and save the planet.

STAR TREK also starred Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, and much of the original series' cast.

Though the film earned $139 million worldwide, it received luke-warm reviews from critics, despite its legendary source material. Regardless, Paramount ordered a sequel, STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, though decreased its budget.
