According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sonia Manzano, who has starred as 'Maria' on the children's television show SESAME STREET since 1971, has announced that she will be leaving the show.

The author, speaker, and actress also served as a writer for the series and has picked up 5 Emmy Awards during her time on Sesame Street.

Her character, Maria began as a teenager in 1974, and later married the show's fictional Luis, played by Emilio Delgado. The couple went on to welcome daughter, Gabi (Desiree Casado), who is now fully grown.

SESAME STREET is a production of Sesame Workshop, a nonprofit educational organization. The Workshop produces SESAME STREET programs, seen in over 150 countries, and other acclaimed shows, including The Electric Company.
