LA Opera to Revive Gounod's ROMEO AND JULIET Directed by Kitty McNamee
Performances will run November 2-23.
LA Opera is set to revive Charles Gounod's beloved 1867 opera adaptation of Romeo and Juliet from November 2 through 23, featuring the highly anticipated directorial debut of Kitty McNamee, who will also serve as the production's choreographer. McNamee, known for her visionary choreography in the 2005 and 2011 productions, now takes on the dual role of director and choreographer in this fresh staging of one of LA Opera's Signature Productions.
McNamee, a celebrated director and choreographer across opera, dance, and theater, is renowned for her ability to fuse movement with storytelling. Her involvement promises to infuse the production with an innovative blend of dramatic depth and physical expression, capturing the intense emotional landscape of Gounod's adaptation.
Reflecting on her expanded role in the production, McNamee shared: "I've always felt a deep connection to this production of Romeo and Juliet. It's an honor to bring a new perspective to the staging while continuing to celebrate the emotional intensity and physicality that defines this work."
The production will star tenor Duke Kim and soprano Amina Edris, both making their LA Opera debuts as the star-crossed lovers. Venezuelan conductor Domingo Hindoyan will lead the first four performances, followed by LA Opera Resident Conductor Lina González-Granados for the final two.
The revival will once again feature the iconic set design by the late John Gunther and costume design by Tim Goodchild, maintaining the production's timeless visual appeal while incorporating McNamee's fresh directorial vision.
