The Emerald Cup Announces Their 2017 Glass Artists

The 14th annual Emerald Cup is excited to announce 2017's glass artists. These talented artists create the unique special trophies that are given to the winners of the competition. This year's artists include JD Maplesden, Tristan Hodges, Becky Beardsley, Luke Wilson, Mobius, Jason Burruss, and Becky Beardsley (HaHa Glass).

With consistent growth each year, The Emerald Cup has continued to mirror the ever-expanding landscape of the cannabis community. With a strong connection to the community and the culture that surrounds it, The Emerald Cup has maintained its position as the most prestigious cannabis event each year. A large part of this is the partnership we share with the glass community. Once seen as taboo or an underground culture has now become in some ways the epicenter that drives much of the movement into the light and out of the darkness. We all remember the first glass pipe we saw, and how there were "pipe makers" and then "glass artists" like Dale Chihuly and now some of the most notable glass sculptors make pipes. This movement with the glass world has so much energy surrounding it today it truly is incredible. The role glass art plays in this community is precisely why The Emerald Cup collaborates with artists each year to create unique and special trophies to be given to the winners of the competition. We strive to bring some of the most talented visionary artists together to make all of our trophies each year, and this one is no different. We are so excited with what these artists are putting together; brand new designs being shown for the first time, unique collaborations, and attention to detail for each category to make this competition one to remember.

Such a remarkable set of awards are being put together for all of this years competitors that we will have the trophies on display for all attendees to appreciate before our heroes claim them during the awards ceremony.

Becky is crafting the CBD Awards for The Emerald Cup 2017. Haha Glass is known best for the swirling motifs on all of Beardsley's work. Many of HaHa Glass's pieces are centered around natural themes, especially birds, feathers, and the sense of flight. She is also colorblind, which has led to some exceptional color palettes on her pipes. Her swirling styles lead to the creation of her functional pendants which can be easily noticed on a shelf or around someone's neck.

Tristan is crafting the Full season, Light Dep and Lifetime Achievement awards for The Emerald Cup 2017. Truly describing himself in his own words, "I like to sculpt the things that have sculpted me", Tristan has built a career in glass that accurately translates his life outside of it. Born in New York, Tristan now resides in northern California where he dedicates his life to his work and his family. With over a decade strong blowing glass he continues to push himself with his combinations of function and form throughout his art.

Luke is crafting the Topicals, Edibles & Breeders Cup Award for The Emerald Cup 2017. With a focus on functional glass, Luke Wilson has driven Leisure glass to become a staple of the glass community. With 17 years of experience and counting, Luke continues to work hard and strive to innovate the scientific glass community.

Mobius is crafting the Regenerative Cannabis Farm Award for The Emerald Cup 2017. Mobius was founded in early 2010 by John M., known by his torch name cIRclE. John has been a full-time glassblower since November of 1999. Mobius is an ever-evolving premium scientific glassblowing company consisting of a small crew of highly skilled craftsmen.

JD Maplesden is crafting the Rosin, Solventless, CO2 and Distillate awards for The Emerald Cup 2017. Whether you're talking about his past work with Mothership, the creation of the "Wormhole" or the making of Vagabong, bottom line is this guy has what it takes to get work done. Working and collaborating with so many artists over the years he is able bring fresh ideas and techniques to his canvases while still keeping his style in each piece he touches. JD has been working with glass since 2001.

Jason Burress is crafting the Tinctures award for The Emerald Cup 2017. A well know name in the jewelry and glass communities, Jason has been perfecting his craft for years. His hard work and dedication to pushing the boundaries of the marriage of jewelry and glass are unmatched. This hard work is also seen through this efforts with Purple Couch Events in Northern California and Denver setting up well organized music and art events.

Whether it's his form and shaping, fuse work on marbles, rhetti work, Jahnny Rise glass has been pleasing to the eyes for years. The collaborative work he's done with JD Maplesden for the awards this year are truly a special showcase of his style on JD's canvas, the wormhole.

His skills and precision in his highly detailed work got him very well known within the glass community. Working on glass since 2001, he was raised an international traveler and continues his journeys as a true student of art under the rightly named Global Glassworks.

Whether it's perfectly sculpted leaves draped over a collaborators design, or his own museum quality functional art pieces, Mr Gray's work is hard to miss.
