SUGAR Releases Documentary Ahead of Love You Even Still Tour, Aug. 11 in Denver
Rob Hatch-Miller directed the film, which includes interviews with David Barbe and Malcolm Travis.
SUGAR has released Changes: The Story of SUGAR, a 20-minute documentary tracing the band's history from its early 1990s practice sessions to three sold-out shows at Webster Hall this past May. The film premiered on YouTube at 12 noon ET, followed by an online afterparty featuring Bob Mould. Its release comes as the U.S. leg of SUGAR's Love You Even Still world tour prepares to begin August 11 in Denver, with additional sold-out dates and festival appearances to follow.
The documentary was filmed entirely over the course of SUGAR's run at Webster Hall and features archival footage, sit-down interviews with members Bob Mould, David Barbe and Malcolm Travis, snippets from Mould's memoir, 'See A Little Light: The Trail Of Rage And Melody,' and special guest appearances.
'It seems to have been one of the happiest eras of Bob's life,' said Hatch-Miller. 'We found so much great archival footage, like Lance Bangs' never-before-seen video of the band's first show ever at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, footage of Bob's solo acoustic European festival tour with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Nirvana in 1991, and so many clips of Bob and the band on MTV's 120 Minutes, where they were so warmly embraced and brought to a mainstream television audience.'
As Mould says in the film, 'I tend to be identified most with Hüsker Dü and my solo albums, but few know the half of how much fun I had with Sugar.'
With the triumphant European leg of their Love You Even Still World Tour wrapped up, the band is gearing up for their North American shows, which begin on August 11 in Denver and feature 24 dates across the U.S., including three sold out nights at First Avenue in Minneapolis MN and two shows at Union Transfer in Philadelphia PA, while also hitting Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C, Boston, New York, and Atlanta, with the final date being October 24 in Athens, GA.
A portion of each ticket purchase will be donated to The Trevor Project, the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ young people.

About SUGAR
Having already placed his indelible mark on modern music with Hüsker Dü and solo album Workbook, Bob Mould enlisted bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis leading to the formation of SUGAR, who made their live debut in early 1992 at Athens, GA's famed 40 Watt Club.
Named by NME as its 1992 Album of the Year, SUGAR's now-classic debut album, Copper Blue, immediately proved a sensation, earning worldwide acclaim and landmark status for the melodic strength and intensely cathartic popcraft of songs like 'A Good Idea', 'Helpless', and the alternative rock radio hit and MTV favorite, 'If I Can't Change Your Mind'.
With the wind at their back, SUGAR unleashed Beaster in 1993, making a momentous debut at #4 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. Though recorded during the same sessions that yielded Copper Blue, the six-song mini-album evinced a more visceral energy and dark melancholy than its predecessor, highlighted by such pulverising expressions of sacrilegious fury as 'Judas Cradle' and 'JC Auto'.
1994's second full-length LP, File Under: Easy Listening once again made an explosive arrival, this time landing in the upper reaches of the overall Billboard 200. The album saw SUGAR pushing boundaries yet again on songs like the Americana-tinged 'Believe What You're Saying' and the incendiary 'Gee Angel', tackling a wider range of musical approaches without sacrificing their signature intensity and unrestrained power.
Despite their successes, SUGAR called it a day following a Japanese tour in early 1995. A series of live recordings, reissues, and anthologies served to magnify the band's legacy over the three decades since, confirming SUGAR as incontrovertible masters of high-volume guitar-fuelled rock for the ages.
The original members of SUGAR reconvened in June 2025 to record 'House Of Dead Memories', 'Long Live Love', and 'Keep Looping' – the first new SUGAR songs in over three decades.
The documentary was produced and directed by Rob Hatch-Miller, whose previous credits include Other Music and Syl Johnson: Any Way The Wind Blows. It features archival footage and interviews with SUGAR members Bob Mould, David Barbe and Malcolm Travis, along with excerpts from Mould's memoir, See A Little Light: The Trail Of Rage And Melody. The film was edited by Greg King and shot by cinematographer Paul Yee.
