Polyphonic Ground to Launch with Turkwaz, Sandcatchers and Grooz in Concert
Concerts for the culturally curious - Polyphonic Ground is a new local initiative by live music presenters committed to building and sustaining Toronto as a global music city. Polyphonic Ground Presents is a series of monthly concerts curated by diverse pairings among the twelve founding organizations for an authentic musical exploration.
The inaugural Polyphonic Ground Presents unites Ashkenaz Foundation and Small World Music Society, the creative catalyst behind Polyphonic Ground, in a co-presentation of Turkwaz (Toronto), Sandcatchers (Brooklyn), and GROOZ (Montreal) for an evening of Balkan voices, Middle-Eastern/Appalachian fusion, and Algerian-Québécois grooves at Revival Bar on Thursday, September 14, 2017.
United by long standing friendships and a love of singing, the Juno-nominated Turkwaz are distinguished singer-musicians Jayne Brown, Sophia Grigoriadis and Maryem Tollar; who have come together to celebrate the stories of life through Balkan, Albanian, Bulgarian, and Macedonian song traditions.
Sandcatchers was formed in a Brooklyn soul food restaurant by guitarist and Middle Eastern oud player Yoshie Fruchter, with Myk Freedman on lap steel, Michael Bates on bass and Tim Keiper on percussion. With Jewish roots, traditional Arabic music, jazz and Americana, a fresh original sound was created.
Led by the groovy front man Abdelhak Benmedjebari, the Montreal-based Algerian group GROOZ skillfully marries the rich Moroccan heritage of ancient African spiritual music with jazz, rock, reggae and blues for a modern take on their ancestral heritage.
The inaugural Polyphonic Ground Presents concert also celebrates the launch of the 16th annual Small World Music Festival, running September 14-17. For 20 years Small World Music Society has been bringing Toronto music from around the world and around the corner.
Future Polyphonic Ground Presents concerts are scheduled for October 12, co-presenters Batuki Music and Uma Nota Culture; November 9, programmed by Link Music Lab and Good Kind Productions; and December 14, curated by Lula Music & Arts and Music Africa.
