Critically acclaimed singer, guitarist, and composer Howard Fishman and his childhood friend, New York Times travel journalist, author, and photographer Michael Benanav will chronicle their travels through rural Romania and Hungary in the multimedia song cycle No Further Instructions at The Jewish Museum on Thursday, November 21 at 7:00pm. Fishman, appearing with his "Romanian Orchestra," will play original music blending bluegrass, experimental rock, and Balkan brass while Benanav recites from Joshua and Isadora, his memoir about the remarkable story of his grandparents, Holocaust survivors who met in that part of the world. Projections of photos taken by Benanav during their trip complement the music and the story. This dramatic music performance, a New York premiere, is a unique blend of song, historical memoir, photography and storytelling.

Musicians appearing with Fishman include a virtual who's who of first-call NYC sidemen (and women): Will Holshouser, accordion; Kenny Bentley, sousaphone; Marika Hughes, cello; Stephanie Griffin, viola; Jordan Perlson, drums; and several others.

Tickets to the November 21 performance are $15 adults, $12 students/seniors, and $10 Jewish Museum members. For further information, visit TheJewishMuseum.org/calendar or call212.423.3337.

Singer, guitarist, composer and bandleader Howard Fishman's infectious, spontaneous, and unvarnished music has made him a favorite of audiences and critics alike. Fishman filters a passion for New Orleans jazz, Brooklyn soul, open-hearted country, blues and gospel music through an original, experimental aesthetic, to create a sound entirely his own. He has headlined in some of the most prestigious venues in the United States and abroad, including Lincoln Center, The Steppenwolf Theatre, The Blue Note, The Pasadena Playhouse, Joe's Pub, The Great American Music Hall, and Le Petit Journal in Paris. Fishman has performed with such diverse artists as Odetta, Yo Yo Ma, Maceo Parker, Robyn Hitchcock, Madeleine Peyroux, Allen Holdsworth and Nellie McKay. He is a frequent NPR guest, making feature-length appearances on Fresh Air, World Café, The Leonard Lopate Show and Soundcheck. Fishman's eleventh album, Uncollected Stories, will be released in early 2014.

Michael Benanav is an author and freelance photographer known for immersing himself in foreign cultures and bringing compelling images and stories back from distant places. In addition to his books, he writes and/or shoots for The New York Times, Lonely Planet, The Christian Science Monitor Magazine, Geographical, Afar, CNN.com, Wend, and Hand/Eye. Nongovernmental organizations such as Save Tibet, The UN Foundation, and Sustainable Cotton Project have used his photographs. He is also the founder of the educational non-profit organization, Traditional Cultures Project.

Public Programs at The Jewish Museum are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. Major annual support is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The stage lighting system has been funded by the Office of Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer.
