On Stage at Kingsborough (formerly known as Kingsborough Performing Arts Center), on the oceanfront campus of Kingsborough Community College, announces its 2011 series of free outdoor concerts during the month of July.

"We look forward with joyous anticipation to the 2011 HOT SUMMER NIGHTS! free outdoor concert series in the shadow of our breathtaking lighthouse, where the sights and sounds of the sea create a thoroughly enjoyable atmosphere for a world-class concert," stated Anna Becker, Executive Director of On Stage at Kingsborough. "These concerts are free and open to the general public, and we look forward to welcoming everyone for a gorgeous night of great music in a friendly community setting."

PERFORMANCE INFORMATION:

Saturday, July 2 @ 8 p.m.: Brooklyn Community Wind Ensemble & Concert Band
Brooklyn's beloved band, conducted by Ray Wheeler, pays musical tribute to Independence Day with their ever-popular Stars and Stripes Forever Concert.
Saturday, July 9 @ 8 p.m.: The Danny Repole Swing Band
Audiences will be dancing in the aisles at the ever-popular Seaside Swing Concert, featuring such golden chestnuts as In The Mood, It Don't Mean A Thing, A Merengue, and I've Got You Under My Skin.

Saturday, July 16 at 8:00 p.m.: Chestnut Brass Company
The Grammy Award-winning Chestnut Brass Company will perform their Opening Night Concert featuring some of Broadway's most memorable compositions by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin, including The Man I Love, Night and Day, Satin Doll, and In The Still of the Night. The ensemble also will play some special selections on their collection of antique brass instruments and make them available for viewing after the performance.

Saturday, July 23, at 8:00 p.m.: The Birdland Big Band
The resident band of the popular New York City nightclub of the same name will play Around The World In Jazz, with guest violinist Ali Bello.

MAKE IT A PICNIC!

This summer we are delighted to welcome Maria The Ice Cream Girl (KCC grad, Maria Campanella) who will be selling bagel wheels, wraps, chips, candy, soda and, of course, ice cream! Gates open at 7:00 p.m. so come early and make it a picnic concert! Concert-goers can bring their own picnics too.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

All performances are free and open to the public and reservations are not necessary
Kingsborough Community College is located at 2001 Oriental Boulevard, Brooklyn, NY.
There is ample, free parking on the campus.

Performances take place at Kingsborough's outdoor bandshell. Limited seating is available, but audiences are welcome to bring folding chairs and blankets too.
In case of rain, performances will take place indoors at the Performing Arts Center. The box office voicemail will be updated at 4:00 p.m. on show days to reflect location information.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Brooklyn Community Wind Ensemble & Concert Band is an organization consisting of professional musicians who have performed with some of the leading musical groups in the country. Music teachers from all levels of education, members of the community from many professions that are also fine musicians, and music students from high school through College. The aim of the organization is to give all people involved an opportunity to play concert band music at the highest level. It is one of the few musical ensembles in which students sit side by side with professional musicians, some whom have played with The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, The Goldman Memorial Band, and more.
The Danny Repole Swing Band. Bandleader Danny Repole's illustrious career includes performing in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Guy Lombardo Orchestra, at Radio City Music Hall, and on original Broadway cast recordings such as The Sound of Music, Cabaret, and Chicago. The band makes regular appearances at the Hotel Edison in New York City.
Chestnut Brass Company. This Grammy Award-winning brass ensemble has earned international acclaim for their brilliant performances on modern and historical brass instruments at The Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, and internationally. As curators of the sounds of ancient and antique brasses, the Chestnut Brass Company have been at the forefront of the period-instrument revival with performances on cornetti, sacbuts, keyed bugles and saxhorns. The quintet continues to collect antique brass instruments and to research the literature and performance practice of these instruments. This extraordinary diversity of repertoire and instrumentation enables the Chestnut Brass Company to offer a variety of exciting, entertaining and innovative programs. They can be heard on the Sony, Newport Classic, Crystal and Musical Heritage/Musicmasters labels. Selections from CBC recordings have been featured on several documentaries ranging from A House Divided for PBS, to Pinehurst, the History of Golf.

The Birdland Big Band is the resident band at the popular New York City nightclub of the same name. Conductor Tommy Igoe has toured internationally with Art Garfunkel; Blood, Sweat, and Tears; and Dave Grusin, and wrote the drum book for Broadway's "The Lion King." Special Guest Violinist Ali Bello has collaborated and performed with a wide range of world-renowned artists including Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri's Big Band, Doc Severinsen, and Beyonce.

Kingsborough Community College Founded in 1963, Kingsborough Community College, a college of the City University of New York (CUNY), has provided half a million students with liberal arts, applied science, and career education. Our 70-acre waterfront campus is on Manhattan Beach, at the extreme southern end of Brooklyn. The college's mission is to respond to the educational, cultural, and economic needs of our students and our community.
