Joe's Pub Releases Schedule for December 23rd through January 1st.

Schedule:

AMBER MARTIN: AMBER ALERT!
Thursday, December 23 at 7:30 PM; $15

"Amber has turned that Big Apple into a quivering pool of applesauce. Listening to her sing is like aural saline." -- Dina Martina

"Like watching Ruth Draper after she's come back from an acid trip during which she thought she was Janis Joplin... Fight for a ticket." -- Willamette Week

In the footsteps of comic character monologists such as Lily Tomlin, John Leguizamo, and Whoopi Goldberg, acclaimed comedic performance artist Amber Martin brings her award winning chops to Joes Pub. Created and performed by Martin, Amber Alert! is an intimately mind-altering hour of meticulously chosen musical and comedic vignettes from Amber's strange and fascinating toybox of characters.

Blending music, video, monologues, movement, and acid-capped comedy with a pristine, multi-octave range singing voice, Amber Alert! is Amber Martin's own serio-comic multiple-personality trip.

Noted as a performer of many faces and voices with boundless energy to burn, performer Amber Martin has left such celebrity audience members as Joyce Dewitt, Michael Stipe, Karen Black, Chuck Palanhuik, Todd Haynes, Dina Martina, John Cameron Mitchell, and Justin Bond howling in ecstasy. So put on your thinking caps for an old school downtown-style cocktail performance by one of the next sensations of thought-provoking musical comedy... Miss Amber Martin.

SCREAM ALONG WITH BILLY: A VERY NICO CHRISTMAS

"...Kept the audience mesmerized. Absurdist theater can happen anywhere, especially if it's kept alive by artists like Hough." -- Hilton Als, The New Yorker

"Gay-street-hustler-once-removed rough rides the rock cannon and tells drug stories that'll make you chortle as your hair stands on end." - Robert Christgau, MSN.com

"A cross between Justin Bond and Patti Smith." - Adam Baran, Butt magazine

"Billy Hough is touched by genius, a word I don't use often or lightly." - Michael Cunningham

If it's Christmas, it must be Nico! Scream Along with Billy returns to Joe's pub with an all new Christmas Fucktacular. Billy Hough on piano and heroin, and Susan Goldberg on bass and eye rolls bring their filthy blend of music and lunacy back to New York City for Jesus' birthday.

Built around a suite of songs from Nico's 1967 album Chelsea Girl, and including other Holiday favorites by John Cale and Marianne Faithfull, this will be a Christmas show unlike anything your mother has ever seen. Punk legends the GarageDogs are back, featuring Billy's (hot straight) brothers Paul Hough on drums, and Matt Hough on guitar, to perform their hit "Christmas is Great." With new songs, written especially for this show, interpretive dance, and a special appearance by the Ghost of William S. Burroughs, this will be a Junky's Christmas for junkies and Jews, lesbians and lambs, and YOU fucker! One night only. Duh. No kids.

JACKIE FIVE-0H!: A CELEBRATION OF Jackie Hoffman'S FIRST 50TH BIRTHDAY
Mondays, November 22, 29, December 6, 13 at 7:30 PM
JUST ADDED BY POPULAR DEMAND: Fridays December 24 at 7:30 PM & December 31 at 7:00 PM

Broadway's Jackie Hoffman, acclaimed for her hysterical scene-stealing performances in such shows as Hairspray, Xanadu and currently as ‘Grandma' in The Addams Family, will bring her all-new solo show Jackie Five-Oh!: A Celebration of Jackie Hoffman's First 50th Birthday to Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette Street) beginning Monday, November 22 for four consecutive Monday evenings.

In the all-new Jackie Five-Oh!, the blisteringly funny, filter-free Hoffman muses on her own decay, as well as about her experiences playing ‘Grandma' and a host of other topics such as Haiti and Hollywood. Hoffman will also world premiere several new musical numbers, including two that she wrote for ‘Grandma'....if she were to have a solo number in The Addams Family, which of course she doesn't .....not that she's ever complained about that.

Hoffman's previous outings at Joe's Pub (immortalized on the CD Jackie Hoffman: Live At Joe's Pub....NOT sold in the Lunt-Fontanne lobby) have garnered a cult following, as well as critical acclaim. Charles Isherwood of The New York Times wrote, "Jackie Hoffman's solo shows at Joe's Pub have become a beloved ritual. Ms. Hoffman radiates anything but love and charity as she reviews the year in outrage, both global and personal. And who can blame her! " Adam Feldman in Time Out wrote, "Jackie Hoffman is the funniest woman in America."

Jackie Five-Oh! is written by Hoffman and Michael Schiralli, and directed by Schiralli. Musical direction is by Bobby Peaco. Jackie Five-Oh! will be performed Monday, November 22; Monday, November 29; Monday, December 6; and Monday, December 13. Performance time is 7:30 pm. Tickets are $30. "Funny, Moving, Sexy, Hot, Cool and Genuinely on the edge. A powerhouse. You are likely to be blown away!" - Liz Smith

Sandra Bernhard is priming her hysterical insight, outspoken views and outrageous mouth to ring in the New Year. Sandra's brilliant unity of hilarious diatribes on the state of modern culture and classic rock attitude burns smart. Sandra's show is fresh, crazy and real. She inspires and invigorates. See her New Year's Weekend and rave! Discounts on New Year's Eve show if you purchase before Thanksgiving!

Since she first stepped on stage at the Comedy Store in the ‘70s, Sandra Bernhard has been challenging fans and critics with her outrageous humor, keen satire and rollicking stage shows. "Give the dame her due," writes the New York Times, "It's invigorating to be in the presence of a true original."

Bernhard, who writes and develops all of her own material, has produced numerous one-woman shows over the years, among them: Without You I'm Nothing-which was released as a feature film-Excuses for Bad Behavior, Giving ‘Til It Hurts, Hero Worship, the Love Machine, and Everything Bad and Beautiful, which ran for two months off-Broadway, before Bernhard toured with it, making numerous stops across the U.S. and in Europe. "A performer of stunning originality. Funny but foxy, super smart and slightly mad!" proclaimed WCBS. "Bernhard is a very funny woman by nature, a rocker by sheer determination and an actress you've seen in eclectic offerings," says the Washington Post.

Bernhard's one-woman Broadway show, "I'm Still Here ... Damn It!," was hailed by the New York Times as "an angst driven, foul-mouthed poison-laced joy ride that banks and careens frenetically through the worlds of fashion, celebrity, rock, and religion. In her own voice, unfiltered, [Bernhard] is a living, breathing bonfire." The show, which initially ran for five months off Broadway, went on to play sold-out runs in Boston and San Francisco, and was filmed for an HBO special.

Bernhard first earned film accolades in 1983 when she appeared in Martin Scorsese's "The King of Comedy." Other film work includes "Inside Monkey Zetterland," "Track 29," "Hudson Hawk," "Dinner Rush," and "Dare." And she is about to begin filming on two new projects.

From 1991-1996, Bernhard portrayed Nancy Bartlett on "Roseanne," and she has had guest starring or recurring roles on numerous other shows, among them; "Ally McBeal," "The Larry Sanders Show," "The Sopranos," "Law & Order: SVU," "The L Word," "Will & Grace," and "The New Adventures of Old Christine." She has appeared numerous times on "Late Night with David Letterman," and has been a guest on "The Tonight Show," "The View," "The Joy Behar Show," "The Jimmy Kimmel Show," "The Rachel Maddow Show," and Showtime's "The Green Room," among others. She has appeared regularly on the Howard Stern show since the ‘80s. And was the host of "Sandra After Dark," for HBO, and "Reel Wild Cinema."

In addition to her original songs, Bernhard performs covers from Led Zeppelin to Laura Nyro; Burt Bachrach to Britney Spears. "One moment, her voice is lulling you into a wistful sigh; the next, she's knocking you back several rows with it," proclaimed the SF Weekly. Her albums include: "I'm Your Woman," and most recently she collaborated on the world music album "Whatever it Takes," featuring African musicians such as Papa Wemba and TK. She has also sung with or opened for various musical acts, including: The Pretenders, Cyndi Lauper, and the Scissor Sisters. She participated in the "Stormy Weather Benefit '98," organized by Don Henley, which also featured Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell and "The Elton John Tribute for Broadway Cares." Bernhard has also lent her talents to benefits for organizations including: The Ali Forney Center for LGBT Homeless Youth, and Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS.

Bernhard has written three books: Confessions of a Pretty Lady (Harper&Row, 1988), Love, Love and Love (HarperCollins, 1994), and May I Kiss You on the Lips, Miss Sandra? (William Morrow, 1998). And she is currently at work on her fourth collection. Her work has also been published in numerous magazines, including, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveler, Rolling Stone, Interview, and Spy.
