Diana Krall to Perform at the Segerstrom Center, 4/5

Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes Grammy Award-winning, multiple- platinum album jazz artist Diana Krall in a one-night-only concert on Saturday, April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Segerstrom Hall. The concert is part of Krall's Glad Rag Doll world tour. Her return to the Center will include selections from her latest album, which features modern renditions of vintage songs from the 1920s and '30s complete with Krall's signature sultry sound.

Krall's latest release, Glad Rag Doll, marks her fifth consecutive Top 10 debut on the Billboard 200. It is also a very personal album for Krall, who fondly remembers her childhood home filled with her father's 78 rpm records and old sheet music. But she offers a change of pace for the Classic American Songbook; it's filled with mischief, humor and a renewed sense of tenderness and intimacy. Glad Rag Doll is an exhilarating exploration of new sounds, new instrumentation and new musicians. "We all just went in there as if the songs were written yesterday. I didn't want to make a period piece or nostalgia record," says Krall.

Working for the first time with renowned producer T-Bone Burnett and engineer Mike Piersante, Krall revels in a fresh sonic playground captured in the vivid grain and deep resonant focus of analog tape. Burnett has assembled a distinguished cast to complement Krall's piano contribution and keen sense of timing at an 1890s Steinway upright. From the hushed to the howling, Marc Ribot's poised and sympathetic solo guitar accompaniment on the title track contrasts beautifully with a range of surprising sounds and colors. Krall has established a new and exciting rhythmic rapport with drummer Jay Bellerose and bassist Dennis Crouch that has revealed some of her most joyous piano playing heard on record to date. Among the new elements brought into the spontaneous arrangement process are the mysterious, sometimes comedic commentaries coming from the keyboards of Keefus Green.

In addition to the presenting and producing institution Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the 14-acre campus also embraces the facilities of two independent acclaimed organizations: Tony Award-winning South Coast Repertory and a site designated as the future home of the Orange County Museum of Art.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts is also proud to serve as the artistic home to three of the region's major performing arts organizations: Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Pacific Chorale, who contribute greatly to the artistic life of the region with annual seasons at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
