Carl Broemel (of My Morning Jacket) Announces New Solo Album WISHED OUT Available September 21

On September 21, Carl Broemel will release Wished Out via Stocks In Asia / Thirty Tigers. The album marks his third solo release and follow up to 2016's acclaimed 4th of July. Of the last record, Pitchfork wrote, "Broemel cycles through one buttery solo after another, each richer and more textured than the last" and Spin Magazine acclaimed it as a "sanctuary of soft pop." However, it was precisely that experience that encouraged Broemel to take a more assertive approach on Wished Out.

"I wanted to get things moving," says Broemel, who remembers playing shows in support of his 2016 solo release - the critically-acclaimed 4th of July, full of daydreaming guitar tones and soft dynamics. "My songwriting can be very mellow. I love that mood, but I needed more balance this time around. I needed more energy! Wished Out is all about the yin and yang."

Today, Broemel released an official video for "Starting From Scratch," the first single to be released from the forthcoming album.

"The ideas for this song came from me taking a little solo trip in Southern California," explains Broemel. "On a really cloudy day, I drove up into the mountains above Malibu. I was thinking I'd still go ahead and take a hike even if i couldn't see anything. To my surprise, I actually drove up into, and then through the clouds. I felt like I was inside the sky. The clouds were draping and scraping around the mountains. I was all alone up there, the first person on the trails. Spider webs still remained from the night before, and lizards darted around. That spot felt so precious and almost sacred that I didn't want to come down. But when I finally did, my brain seemed to have completely rebooted itself."

Broemel recorded Wished Out at his newly-constructed home studio in Nashville, tracking many of the instruments alone before reaching out to several friends - including Robbie Crowell (Deer Tick), Russ Pollard (Everest, Sebadoh), and My Morning Jacket bandmates Tom Blankenship and Bo Koster - for help.

He worked in spurts, taking short breaks to drive his son to school and longer breaks to hit the road with My Morning Jacket, and pulled triple duty as Wished Out's producer, engineer, and frontman along the way.

In support of the new album, Broemel, along with support from Steelism, will hit the road for a national tour. Tickets go on sale Friday, August 3rd. Find a full list of tour dates below.
