KOEK to Live Stream 'PILOT' Performance Tonight

Avant-garde sax and voice duo, KOEK, featuring soprano Aliana de la Guardia and saxophonist Kent O'Doherty, present their inaugural concert entitled "PILOT" live streamed by Equilibrium Concert Series tonight, Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 7:30pm EST from the Davis Square Theater, 255 Elm Street, in Somerville, MA. The program features solo and duo works by: Luciano Berio, the world premiere of works by Sergio Luque, Daniel T. Lewis, and Justin Barish, and haunting electronic interludes by Kent O'Doherty. This concert also features staging direction by the duo and punk lighting design. KOEK, pronounced "cook," is the Dutch word for cake. The duo, which features soprano Aliana de la Guardia and saxophonist Kent O'Doherty, emerged from their mutual desire to further their personal artistic disciplines and to create an enveloping concert experience together. They were inspired to start the duo from the influence of the beautiful and audacious music and theatre that has been present in their lives as members of Guerilla Opera, and from their mutual love of other creative art forms. Aliana de la Guardia is a classical singer, actor, and producer hailed by Stuff Magazine as "an anomalous player on the Boston music scene." The Cuban-American performer began training in theater and film at a young age in her native New Jersey and completed studies in voice and opera at The Boston Conservatory. An avid performer of New Music, she has performed the works of many of the leading composers of our time such as Berio, Birtwistle, Gorecki, Kurtág, Sciarrino, and among others, as well as collaborating with composers to commission new works. She a co-founding artist of Guerilla Opera, with which she has co-produced and premiered 9 new operas, director of the production company Dirty Paloma, and half of the avant-garde duo KOEK. The Arts Fuse writes: "Her natural sound is lovely, as clear and powerful as grain alcohol..." Additional New Music performances with: Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Center for Contemporary Opera, Ludovico Ensemble, Firebird Ensemble, I/O Ensemble, Xanthos Ensemble, and Harvard Group for New Music, among others. Standard classical repertoire includes performances with Boston Lyric Opera, Granite State Opera, New England Philharmonic, and Cappella Clausura, among others. Additional accomplishments include guest speaker at the National Opera Association 2011 Convention and panelist at Boston Lyric Opera's "Night at the Opera" series (January 2012). Artistic residencies include the University of Memphis (2011), The Boston Conservatory (2007-current), and faculty at Hubbard Hall Opera Theater Summer Conservatory (2011 & 2012). Kent O'Doherty is an interdisciplinary art maker whose work generally falls into the territory of existence and being. A native of Australia, he saxophone-studied his way through Melbourne (Australia), Rotterdam (Netherlands), and then to Boston, MA, picking up performance art, followed by video and sound sculpture. As a performer/teacher/art-maker, he endeavors to discover what lies beyond both his self and convention. ABOUT THE COMPOSERS
Luciano Berio (1925-2003) was born in Oneglia, Italy. After studies with Ghedini at the Milan Conservatory, he worked for the Italian Broadcasting Corporation from 1953 until 1960, when he founded the Studio di Fonologia and directed a concert series under its name. He has taught in America at Tanglewood, Mills College and Harvard University, and in Europe at Darmstadt and Dartington; from 1965 to 1971 he was a member of the composition faculty of the Juilliard School in New York. He ran the electro-acoustic department of IRCAM in Paris until 1980; in 1981 he founded tempo Reale, an institute for new music, in Florence. In 1982 he became Musical Director of the newly founded Regional Orchestra of Tuscany. In 1984 he was Artistic Director of the Maggio Musicale in Florence. In 1988 he became an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, London. He has also been awarded the prestigious Siemens Prize. Berio's compositions are performed regularly throughout the world.

Sergio Luque is a composer of instrumental and electro-acoustic music. His work often involves computer-aided algorithmic composition and stochastic processes. He has a PhD in Musical Composition from the University of Birmingham, was a member of BEAST (Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre) and worked on the development of stochastic synthesis,[1] a synthesis technique invented by Iannis Xenakis. In 2006, he received a Master's Degree with Distinction in Sonology from the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, studying with Paul Berg and Kees Tazelaar.[2] In 2004, he received a Master's Degree in Composition from the Conservatory of Rotterdam, studying with Klaas de Vries and René Uijlenhoet. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Composition from the Musical Studies and Research Centre (CIEM, Mexico). His music has been performed in Europe, the Americas, Australia and Japan. Daniel T. Lewis is a Boston-based composer of contemporary classical music. He holds a M.M. in Music Composition from The Boston Conservatory (2012), where he studied with Marti Epstein and Andy Vores, and a B.S. in Music Education from Western Connecticut State University (2009), where he studied composition with Kevin J. Isaacs and percussion performance with David Smith. Daniel's music has been performed frequently in the Boston area, including performances by Lorelei Ensemble, ALEA III, Boston Percussion Group, Ludovico Ensemble, Transient Canvas, Iktus Percussion, and Greenville Chamber Players. His music has also been featured at SICPP at NEC (2012), and at the Zeltsman Marimba Festival (2010). Daniel is currently the Concert Administrator for the Equilibrium Concert Series, a group dedicated to the advancement of new, Boston-local classical chamber music and its performers. Justin Barish is a composer of contemporary art music. He is a graduate of The Boston Conservatory with academic honors, studying with Dalit Warshaw, Marti Epstein and Andy Vores as well as Simon Bainbridge and Samuel Adler. He is the 2012 recipient of the Roger Sessions Memorial Award for Composition. His music has been performed by artists such as The Ludovico Ensemble, The Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble, Eric Hewitt, Marti Epstein, Bethanne Walker, Jeffrey Means and Kent O'Doherty. Recent commissions include Transient Canvas, Joint Venture Percussion, and KOEK. A passionate advocate for the performance of new and contemporary music, he has performed as a percussionist in The Boston Conservatory New Music Festival (2010) and conducted performances ranging from Haydn to over a dozen world premieres. Barish was the winner of The Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble Composition Competition (2011), which resulted in the premiere of "Machine Music" and is to be recorded on Albany Records.
