Emily Coates's INCARNATIONS to Be Performed as Part of Danspace Project, 3/16-18
Emily Coates: Incarnations will be performed March 16-18 at 8pm. Advance tickets are $22 General and $15 for Members. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25 (cash or check only), pending availability.
Performed in-progress as part of Danspace Project's Platform 2015: Dancers, Buildings and People in the Streets, Incarnations is made up of a series of etudes on dancing with science. Based on Emily Coates' collaboration with particle physicist Sarah Demers, the piece moves between lecture and performance, interweaving divergent sources, from Balanchine's Apollo and postmodernist dance aesthetics to the elusive body of Sir Isaac Newton and the breakthrough discovery of the Higgs boson.
The piece illuminates humorous gaps and surprising insights as each discipline struggles to imagine the other. The moments in which the interdisciplinary dialogue must out of necessity break down also yield some of the most effective poetics. Playful and serious, Incarnations celebrates physics and dance as equal partners in our profound effort to understand our existence.
Physicists can explain four percent of the universe. Ninety-six percent remains unknown. Incarnations lingers on both the known and the unknowable, and returns knowledge to human form-casting, in essence, who gets to play god.
The performance on Thursday, March 16 will be followed by a discussion moderated by Douglas Crimp.

Danspace Project presents new work in dance, supports a diverse range of choreographers in developing their work, encourages experimentation, and connects artists to audiences.
Now in its fourth decade, Danspace Project has supported a vital community of contemporary dance artists in an environment unlike any other in the United States. Located in the historic St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, Danspace shares its facility with the Church, The Poetry Project, and New York Theatre Ballet. Danspace Project's Commissioning Initiative has commissioned over 500 new works since its inception in 1994.
Danspace Project's Choreographic Center Without Walls (CW²) provides context for audiences and increased support for artists. Our public programs (including Danspace Presents, Platforms, Food for Thought, DraftWork), Commissioning Initiative, residencies, guest artist curators, and contextualizing activities and materials are core components of CW² offering a responsive framework for artists' works. Since 2010, we have produced eleven Platforms, published eleven print catalogues and five e-books, launched the Conversations Without Walls discussion series, and explored models for public discourse and residencies.
