WholeTone Music Academy Will Present STRINGS WHO SING at The Rockwell

WholeTone Music Academy Presents Strings Who Sing at The Rockwell in Davis Square, a novel chamber ensemble featuring original music by Flight Or Visibility, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at 7:30 PM.

Inspired by the legacies of Rhiannon Giddens, Abel Selaocoe, Carla Kihlstedt, and Laurie Anderson, Strings Who Sing features an ensemble of four singer-songwriters who accompany themselves on bowed string instruments.

This project is the longtime dream of Boston-based artist and organizer Flight Or Visibility, who has written most of the music for the ensemble. With up to four vocal notes and eight string notes happening simultaneously at any given moment, the singing string quartet provides unique sonic textures ranging from minimalist, vulnerable threads of melody to lush, orchestral soundscapes, permeated by a subversive “classical punk” aesthetic.

This concert will mark Strings Who Sing's live performance debut. The quartet features four Massachusetts-based musicians: WTMA faculty member Flight Or Visibility (aka Raf Natan), WTMA Director Nora Maynard, cellist Valerie Thompson, and violinist Clara Rose. While Flight Or Visibility is currently the primary composer and arranger for the ensemble, the group hopes this concert will inspire additional composers to contribute material. Other quartet members are already developing new arrangements.

This free event is produced with support from The Boston Foundation's “Free For All” Grant, as well as Club Passim's Iguana Fund. WholeTone Music Academy welcomes donations benefiting its LGBTQIA+ BIPOC scholarship fund.
