VIDEO: La Fura dels Baus Comes To Lincoln Center This Summer With THE CREATION

Avant-garde Catalan theater collective La Fura dels Baus brings its "freewheeling blend of audiovisual wizardry, acrobatics, and puppetry" (Guardian, U.K) to Haydn's famous oratorio. A relentless stream of imagery, text, and stage pageantry touching on everything from philosophy and physics to DNA research and refugees transforms the Enlightenment-era masterpiece into an immersive theatrical experience. A sublime musical performance by the period-instrument Insula Orchestra, vocal ensemble accentus, and a cast of intrepid soloists, led by visionary conductor Laurence Equilbey, anchors this astonishing, maximalist production that explodes all notions of who we are and where we came from.

This summer marks an expansion of the Mostly Mozart festival, as it significantly increases the size and scope of its multidisciplinary presentations, enhances its commitment to the music of our own time, and extends its geographical footprint to include Central Park and Brooklyn. While maintaining Mozart's creative genius at its heart, the festival will magnify its artistic impact through landmark international productions in all disciplines and concerts by emerging creative voices, as well as commissions and world premieres. Review: John Adams’s EL NINO Finally Arrives at the Met After World Travels

Back in December, I saw the chamber version of John Adams’s EL NINO—dubbed EL NINO: NATIVITY RECONSIDERED—at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Pared down to its essence, it was wonderful, starred two of the singers who made their debuts in the premiere at the Met, soprano Julia Bullock and bass-baritone Davone Tines plus countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, who were at their best. It was a somber evening in a dramatic setting—a far cry from the oratorio/opera’s over-the-top welcome to Lincoln Center last night, in Lileana Blain-Cruz’s production that made me wonder what Franco Zeffirelli might have done with it. Think the Parisian throngs in Act II of the Met’s LA BOHEME (which, of course, is one of the Met’s most popular productions with audiences).
