Parthenia Viol Consort Presents BY THE WATERS OF BABYLON

Parthenia, New York's premiere viol consort, will be in concert on Sunday, March 10 at 4:00 PM, performing By the Waters of Babylon (Al Naharot Bavel), with ARTEK vocal and instrumental ensemble at The Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street in Manhattan. Al Naharot Bavel is a co-presentation of Yeshiva University Museum and Stern College for Women.

NYC ensembles Parthenia and ARTEK present a concert of music by Jewish composers of the Renaissance and Baroque from the courts of Italy and England. Madrigals, fantasies and more by Salomone Rossi in Italy and the Lupo and Bassano musical dynasties in England.

Parthenia members are Beverly Au, Lawrence Lipnik, Rosamund Morley and Lisa Terry.

ARTEK performers will be Laurie Heimes, soprano, Barbara Hollinshead, mezzo-soprano, Andrew Fuchs, tenor, Jonas Budris, tenor, Peter Becker, bass-baritone, Charles Weaver, lute, Motomi Igarashi, viol and Gwendolyn Toth, harpsichord.

A pre-concert talk begins at 3:15pm in the Center's Forchheimer Auditorium, presented by historian Jody Hirsh.

ARTEK, based in New York City and with a reputation as one of America's top early music ensembles, presents concerts of musically significant, rarely-heard repertoire performed on period instruments in historical style, featuring the finest early music artists. Founded by director Gwendolyn Toth in 1986, they present vocalists and instrumentalists in performances of 17th and 18th century repertoire from Italy and Germany. Parthenia is a quartet of viols which animates ancient and contemporary. The ensemble produces its own concert series in NYC, collaborating regularly with the world's foremost early music specialists including Piffaro, Julianne Baird, Paul O'Dette, Blue Heron and ARTEK. Parthenia actively commissions and premieres works by today's composers including Eleonor Sandresky, Richard Einhorn, Phil Kline, Frances White, Max Lifchitz, Will Ayton, Nicholas Patterson and Kristin Norderval. Parthenia's latest CD Nothing Proved, on the MSR Classics label, features music by Hildegard von Bingen, Frances White, Kristin Norderval, and Tawnie Olson.
