LV Philharmonic Presents ALOHA FROM LAS VEGAS Concert Tonight

By:

Las Vegas is considered by many to be the "ninth island" of Hawaii. The Las Vegas Philharmonic's first Pops Series concert for the 2014-15 season will celebrate the strong connection between the tropical paradise and our desert oasis by showcasing traditional and popular Hawaiian music in a program called "Aloha from Las Vegas." The concert will take place tonight, November 15th at 7:30PM in Reynolds Hall, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

The concert will feature the full orchestra conducted by Matt Catingub, guest vocalist Amy Hanaiali'i, and guest drummer Steve Moretti. Hanaiali'i's guitarist and bassist, Jeffrey Peterson and Stephen Jones, will also take the Reynolds Hall stage for the Hawaiian-themed performance. Highlights from the program include the popular theme song Hawaii Five-O and the 1966 hit originally performed by Don Ho, Tiny Bubbles. In addition, Amy Hanaiali'i will perform her biggest hit, Haleiwa Hula, and other notable songs including Have You Ever Seen The Rain, written by John Fogerty, and Hukilau, a traditional Hawaiian song.

Catingub is the Founder & Artistic Director of Hawaii Pops and long-time Pops Conductor of the Honolulu Symphony and the Hawaii Symphony. He is the son of great jazz vocalist and "Polynesia's First Lady of Song," Mavis Rivers. Growing up, Catingub regularly performed with his mother and honed his skills as a conductor, vocalist and alto sax player. Catingub wrote and performed the music for the George Clooney film, "Goodnight and Good Luck." The soundtrack for "Goodnight and Good Luck", featuring Catingub and vocalist Diane Reeves, won a GRAMMY.

Known as Hawaii's top selling female vocalist, Hanaiali'i has received many accolades for her music, including five GRAMMY nominations for Best Hawaiian Music Album and 22 Na Hoku Hanohano awards - Hawaii's equivalent to the GRAMMY awards. Hanaiali'i has performed with many well-known artists including Earth, Wind and Fire, Carlos Santanas, and Diana Krall. She is currently working on a reunion album with legendary Hawaiian singer and songwriter Willie K., and a solo album with acclaimed producer Jason Miles.

Moretti is a drummer, percussionist and producer who has performed with many vocal and instrumental artists including Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Arturo Sandoval, Toni Tennille, and The Temptations. He toured with Catingub and Rosemary Clooney for six years and recorded two GRAMMY nominated CDs with them. Moretti is co-founder of the Macon Pops in Macon, GA, and runs his own production company, Morettiman Music.

The Las Vegas Philharmonic will perform five Pops Series programs during the 2014-15 season, including its annual holiday concert on December 6th, A Gershwin Valentine on February 14th, a Symphonic Spectacular showcasing popular classics on March 28th and A Tribute to Frank Sinatra on May 16th in celebration of Sinatra's upcoming 100th birthday.
