KEIGWIN + COMPANY
Celebrates Bernstein
featuring The University Symphony Orchestra
Sat, Apr 14, 7:30 pm

Born on Aug 25, 1918, in Lawrence, MA, Leonard Bernstein was a legendary American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist called "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history." His many great Broadway works include On the Town (1944), Wonderful Town (1952), Candide (1956) and West Side Story (1957).

Founded in 2003 by Artistic Director and award-winning Broadway Choreographer Larry Keigwin, KEIGWIN + COMPANY captivates national and international audiences by performing refreshing visions of dance that embody an energetic blend of theatrical and contemporary movement. Keigwin, often inspired by artists' early works and career, created the company's Centennial Tour to mirror Bernstein's enthusiasm in his work.

The Apr 14 Northrop program will contain choreography to a compilation of Bernstein early works including Piano Trio (1937) and Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (1942) and finish with Episodes from On the Town, and Waterfront, which first premiered in 2014 at the Kennedy Center.

Conducted by Mark Russell Smith, musicians of the University Symphony Orchestra will perform Bernstein classics on stage with the dancers. The Orchestra is a select ensemble of 80 to 90 University of Minnesota students, primarily music majors, who studied Bernstein's music this year as part of their curriculum.
