Albert Schultz Recognized With Honorary Doctorate From Bishop's University

In recognition of his contribution to Canadian theatre, Soulpepper Founding Artistic Director Albert Schultz received an Honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree from Bishop’s University on Saturday, May 30, 2009.  Bishop’s University annually celebrates the achievements of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Canadian society on a national or international scale.

Albert Schultz is one of Canada’s leading theatre artists. He is an actor, director, singer, producer and artistic director. Along with 11 other leading Canadian actors, he founded Soulpepper in 1998. Under his visionary leadership, the company has grown from a two-play summer season to a 12 month season of more than 400 performances. Schultz regularly directs and appears on stage with Soulpepper, and also leads the Soulpepper Academy, a two-year full-time training program for emerging theatre artists, and Soulpepper’s youth outreach and access initiatives.

The Doctor of Civil Law honorees are chosen by Bishop's University's Degree Committee of Convocation for their exceptional accomplishments in life and work.

Also receiving honorary degrees this year were Chantal Hèbert, Canadian columnist and political commentator, Nancy Knowlton, Co-founder and CEO of SMART Technologies, and The Right Honourable Paul Martin, 21st Prime Minister of Canada.  Past recipients include Jeffrey C. Lozon, Warren Allmand, Mordecai Richler, Ronald Wright, and Stephen Lewis.

Albert Schultz was recognized with the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Québec, on Saturday, May 30, at 10:30 a.m.
