HOUSTON

Taking inspiration from events in her own life, author Traci Allen transports readers to 1970s-era Houston in her new urban fiction, "Ghett-dough Cities: C-Manor" (published by Trafford Publishing).

"This is the beginning of what one family endures to make it and the drama that comes with it," Allen says of her book. "It represents the struggles of most black families in America in one aspect or another."

"Ghett-dough Cities" is told through the eyes of Samantha, a young girl growing up in Houston during the late 1960s and early '70s. She and her friends move through the streets of Third, Fourth and Fifth Ward, creating their own rules as they go along because they don't have sufficient parental supervision.

Bonds of friendship, family betrayal and illegal activity all affect Samantha's life in some way. Allen believes Samantha's coming-of-age tale will resonate with readers who grew up in similar "hoods" during that time. Allen's settings and dialogue are authentic, a trend she plans to continue in future books about Samantha.
