Author Scott Stanley combines his love of early U.S. history with his experiences as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer in his thrilling new novel, "Betrayal of the Cloak" (published by Abbott Press).

"Betrayal of the Cloak" alternates between the 18th century and the present. Loyal to the crown, Sir Jacob Hatfield knows the British cannot afford to fight a war so he smuggles a horde of gold to the colonies in an attempt to bribe key American rebels. The scheme fails and the gold remains lost for 200 years.

When former Navy JAG officer Charlotte Morris' English grandmother dies unexpectedly, Charlotte is grief-stricken. Left with the task of sorting out her grandmother's estate, Charlotte finds a mysterious possession that hints to the location of Hatfield's gold.

A treasure hunt unfolds as Charlotte and her friends search for the missing treasure. Throughout the book, Stanley weaves in elements of drama, romance and adventure that drive his characters' actions, leading to a dramatic climax.

"The accuracy and attention to detail throughout the book is genuine," writes Stanley. "Whether in dialogue, venue and cultural portrayals, or in technical descriptions and procedures related to the workings of certain government agencies, I drew from my firsthand experiences of the people, places and things involved in most of the story."
