OAKLAND, Calif.

Dustin loves to rob banks. Dustin loves to drink. Dustin loves his women. Dustin loves loyalty. He might even love his adopted nephew Jeremy. And sometimes-when he gets a little too enthusiastic in his job collecting for local bookies-Dustin loves to hurt people.

"Uncle Dust," the debut novel from Oakland author Rob Pierce about a bank robber unable to reconcile his vices with domestic life, is now available for sale in paperback and as an ebook. Published by All Due Respect Books, "Uncle Dust" is a fascinating look inside the mind of a hardened yet complicated criminal who becomes an unlikely father figure to his girlfriend's son while preparing for one last heist.

Nominated for a Derringer Award for short crime fiction, Pierce has been published in Flash Fiction Offensive, Pulp Modern, Plots With Guns, Revolt Daily, Near To The Knuckle, and Shotgun Honey. He is the founder and editor of Swill Magazine ("Fiction for the ill literate") and has read at Swill readings and at other Bay Area literary events, including Beast Crawl and Lip Service West.

Early reviews have compared the sharp, gritty prose in "Uncle Dust" to the works of David Goodis, Richard Stark and Elmore Leonard. Says Joe Loya, author of the critically-acclaimed memoir, "The Man Who Outgrew His Prison Cell: Confessions of A Bank Robber": "I was imprisoned for bank robbery, where I read plenty of novels with a bank robber as the protagonist ... The story and dialogue in 'Uncle Dust' captured so much of that world and circumstance in all its squalid glory. Made me wish I'd done time with tough guy Dustin. I thoroughly enjoyed our criminal hero's mind as he observed the world, and himself, through a cynical thief's lens."

The author will read selections from "Uncle Dust" and answer questions at a book launch and signing on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Pegasus Books in downtown Berkeley. Local writers Joe Clifford, Sean Craven, Joel Landmine, Mike Monson and Tom Pitts will also appear at the event.
