In James Calderwood's Opal Eggs of Fire, the Nickols father and son team try their luck on opal mining in an attempt to rid themselves of the bank overdraft and save the farm from imminent foreclosure. After finding a bonanza find of good opal, however, they stumble upon prehistoric black opal dinosaur eggs .One which hatches to a hungry very nasty creature capable of bringing about death and destruction. This mind-expanding book takes readers to Kimba, a farming community in Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, where they will gain a deeper understanding of the variances of the rural industry as it depicts the difficulties of living on overdraft during extended periods of drought.

Set against the backdrop of South Australia, the impact of drought affected not only crops and livestock, but farming families reliant to their yields, especially for those in the marginal rainfall regions. The Nickols family fell on hard times following three bad drought years. With the bank interest skyrocketing, off-farm income, shearing, and harvest work drying up, the bank threatens to sell their farm with the proceeds to cover their debt.

When John and Tony Nickols find out that their neighbor Bert and Harry Kelly had paid off the bank overdraft through opal mining at Coober Pedy, they quickly travel to the place and drill onto a seam of good opal. As luck would have it, the men come across a nest of opals the size and shape of large dinosaur eggs. What ensues is the pilfering of the hard-earned treasures by cunning thieves who become the first meal and victim of what appears to them as a cache of apalized eggs.

A riveting tale packed with action and bloated with stunning twists, turns and bombshells, Opal Eggs of Fire is a surefire treat for sci-fi fans and aficionados.
