FLORENCE, Italy

In his eye-opening new book, "Robert Lansing: A Study in Statecraft" (published by Xlibris), author David Glaser examines the conflict between Robert Lansing's narrowly nationalistic and conservative views of American foreign policy in the period from 1915-1920 and the more liberal and idealistic approaches preferred by President Woodrow Wilson.

This volume is a study of Robert Lansing's career as the American secretary of state from 1915-1920 and his working relationship with Woodrow Wilson. The work is especially significant in examining Lansing's efforts to guide American diplomacy during the period of the struggle for ratification of the Treaty of Versailles in the United States Senate. Of particular interest are Lansing's efforts to bring the United States into the war on the side of the Allies and his attempts to force Wilson to compromise during the Treaty of Versailles negotiations with the United States Senate. In all of his efforts, when a direct approach to the president failed, he resorted to indirection and indiscretion.

Highly informative, insightful and thorough, "Robert Lansing: A Study in Statecraft" is a study of the working relationship between Robert Lansing and Woodrow Wilson and their efforts in American diplomacy from 1915-1920. It strives to instill unto readers a deeper understanding of the dangers the Wilsonian vision of American exceptionally and the spirit of intervention in formulating current American foreign policy.
