The struggles of being a single parent are often the focus of television shows, movies and books. For author Catherine Beaton however, the struggle is an everyday reality. In her new book, "The Weight of Shame" (published by AuthorHouse), she discusses the many challenges she faces daily as a single parent, and how she overcomes them.

"The Weight of Shame" chronicles a 10-year period in Beaton's struggle to raise her two children following her divorce. At the beginning of her story, Beaton is working full time, going to school for her Master's degree and her children are only one and three years old.

With utmost honesty, Beaton writes a series of letters to her children, recalling many challenges she faced. Each letter brings in the past while focusing on the present. What kept Beaton going was the desire to give her children a better future.

Beaton hopes her book will not only stand as a testament to the love she has for her children, but also inspire readers to understand that the human condition is able to withstand countless challenges.

An excerpt from "The Weight of Shame":

"I wear the weight; much as a person wears an old bulky sweater that is tattered, torn and has seen better days. My weight provides protection; feeding it, provides comfort, filling an empty space that remains surprisingly vacuous, no matter how much I try to fill it."
